S. Louise Tedford, Psychologist

Dr. S. Louise Tedford is a licensed psychologist in Austin, Texas. She earned her doctoral degree from The University of Texas at Austin. Dr. Tedford has experience in a variety of settings including schools, a day treatment program, community mental health centers, and private practice. She specializes in working with children and adolescents, with a special interest in anxiety disorders including Selective Mutism.

Dr. Tedford's approach incorporates primarily cognitive behavioral techniques for treating anxiety. She helps children to better understand their feelings, use coping techniques to manage physical symptoms, and approach feared situations using “brave thoughts.” In working with Selective Mutism, she collaborates with each family in developing an individualized treatment plan. With young children, that may include PCIT-SM, in which parents are coached in play therapy skills that help their child feel safe and supported while communicating in different environments. To help generalize the gains made in the office setting, Dr. Tedford guides families in developing hierarchies to practice increasing communication in the “real world.” Because the school setting is an area of great difficulty for many children with selective mutism, Dr. Tedford consults with teachers and school staff to develop a plan for school-based interventions as well.
