Anna Swan, PhD

Dr. Anna Swan is a clinical psychologist with over 10 years of experience providing evidence-based therapy services for children, teens, and young adults with interfering anxiety and related concerns, including Selective Mutism. Her approach is warm, collaborative, and goal-oriented.

Dr. Swan specializes in Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT), an evidence-based treatment which helps clients learn skills to cope with anxiety, and put those skills into practice by gradually engaging in, rather than avoiding, anxiety-provoking situations. For youth with SM, Dr. Swan involves caregivers, schools, and other providers in treatment to support brave talking across settings. Sessions often involve leaving the therapy room to practice bravery in real-world settings, including at school, on playdates, and in other public settings. Dr. Swan offers CBT in-person in San Francisco, CA, and via telehealth when appropriate. She is licensed to provide care in California, New York, and New Jersey.

Dr. Swan also works with families with young children (ages 3 to 6) exhibiting behavioral difficulties, anxiety, and selective mutism. She is certified in Parent-Child Interaction Therapy (PCIT) as a therapist and within-agency trainer through PCIT international. Currently, Dr. Swan only offers PCIT virtually.

Dr. Swan has published over 20 peer-reviewed journal articles and book chapters on the assessment and treatment of youth anxiety. She earned her B.A. with distinction in Psychology at Yale University and her PhD in Clinical Psychology at Temple University, under the mentorship of Philip Kendall, PhD, ABPP. She completed her APA accredited internship at Nemours/Alfred I. duPont Hospital for Children, and postdoctoral fellowship on the Anxiety and Mood Disorders Service at the NYU Child Study Center, part of Hassenfeld Children's Hospital at NYU Langone.

Dr. Swan has held two faculty appointments, at NYU and UCSF. Currently, she is the California Clinical Director at Lumate Health, which specializes in evidence-based care for teens, tweens, and young adults living with interfering anxiety and OCD. She continues to work with psychiatry and psychology learners in areas of expertise as volunteer clinical faculty at UCSF.
