Dr. Veronica Raggi is a child and adolescent psychologist practicing at Alvord, Baker & Associates, LLC in the Washington D.C. metro area. She has extensive experience treating children with Selective Mutism (SM), providing a coordinated and goal oriented treatment approach that targets speaking and social functioning within home, school and community settings. Her approach is tailored to each child’s individual needs and is collaborative and multidisciplinary. She works carefully with the school setting to train school psychologists, counselors, teachers and other school staff in providing effective behavioral intervention for the child with SM. This typically involves in-service trainings, regular consultation with school staff, and hands-on modeling of the approach within the classroom. She connects families to resources within the community such as behavioral aides that can provide intensive 1:1 support within the school setting. She works with parents to establish a hierarchy of fear-related goals for practice, learn techniques for being effective bravery coaches for their children, and develop reward systems. She also provides cognitive behavioral techniques and strategies for youth to manage the cognitive and physical manifestations of their anxiety, and more broadly, specializes in the treatment of children and adolescent with anxiety disorders, as well as ADHD, depression, and oppositional defiant disorder.
Dr. Raggi’s interest in SM started early in her clinical psychology training at the University of Maryland, College Park, and continued with postdoctoral training in the Selective Mutism Program at the NYU Child Study Center under the guidance of Steven Kurtz, Ph.D. and Richard Gallagher, Ph.D., both well-known experts in the treatment of children with SM. Dr. Raggi currently co-directs the Selective Mutism Program at Alvord, Baker & Associates, LLC in Silver Spring and Rockville, MD. The program offers individual and school-based intervention, monthly groups, and a one-week intensive summer camp for children with the disorder.
Dr. Raggi was recently interviewed on a daily mental health literacy radio show on the topic of SM and its treatment. You can listen to this podcast at:
