Dr. Avny is a clinical psychologist with expertise in assessing and treating anxiety disorders in children and adolescents. She was a post-doctoral fellow at the Child Mind Institute, and then served as the Director of the Selective Mutism Program at Kurtz Psychology Consulting PC (KPCPC).
Dr. Avny is best known for developing and implementing WeSpeak – a much needed behavioral group intensive program for pre-teens and teens with SM. She was also the director and clinical supervisor of Mighty Mouth Kids (MMK), an intensive intervention developed by Dr. Steven Kurtz for 3-9 year olds with SM. In addition to her leadership, training, and program development responsibilities at KPCPC, she immersed herself in her clinical work, striving to provide optimal care to her patients and families.
After training under and working for many of the leaders in the field, Dr. Avny opened the Child & Adolescent Anxiety Practice (CAAP) to pursue her programmatic and clinical visions. At CAAP, Dr. Avny provides evidence-based treatment to youth and young adults with the full range of anxiety and related disorders. She runs WeSpeak twice a year and does follow-up consultations as needed with WeSpeak families and schools. Dr. Avny also does individual intensives for youth with SM and OCD, when indicated.
Dr. Avny is particularly interested in identifying mechanisms to translate the progress made in sessions to the real world. She is actively involved in academic organizations, seeking to expand her knowledge and disseminate her work. She is a member of the Association for Behavioral and Cognitive Therapies (ABCT), Anxiety and Depression Association of America (ADAA), and the Selective Mutism Association (SMA), and is a frequent presenter at their annual conferences. Inspired by a former supervisor who was relentless in his therapeutic efforts, Dr. Avny is heavily invested in improving the lives of suffering youth on both an individual and larger scale.
