SUMMARY:Webinar Unlocking the Mystery of Selective Mutism Workshop
DESCRIPTION:The abilities to communicate needs\, socialize\, work in groups\, and make friends are desperately needed to succeed in elementary school and beyond. Children with untreated selective mutism are at an increased risk for self-esteem issues\, depression\, school failure\, social skill problems\, and school refusal. Early and evidence-based therapeutic intervention is of the upmost importance to decrease anxiety and increase communication in children with selective mutism. Aimee Kotrba\, Ph.D.\, uses interactive discussions and humor through stories and anecdotes to describe the process of treatment and her years of experience working with children with selective mutism. Professionals\, school personnel\, and parents will discover useful ways to intervene with even the most difficult cases. Leave not only with a specific\, successful treatment plan for your individual cases but also with the knowledge to teach others in your workplace or community about selective mutism. CEs are available.  \n\n\n\nRegister at link below. \n\n\n\nhttps://www.eventbrite.com/e/unlocking-the-mystery-of-selective-mutism-workshop-and-webinar-tickets-157853713707

SUMMARY:CommuniCamp™ Intensive Group Treatment & Parent Training and Support Program
DESCRIPTION:SMA’s Founder and Director Emeritus\, Dr. Elisa Shipon-Blum and her team\, uses her evidence-based treatment approach\, Social Communication Anxiety Treatment® (S-CAT®)\, at the SMart Center’s CommuniCamp™ 3+ day Intensive Group Treatment and Parent Training Program to help children\, tweens\, and teens ages 3-17 with Selective Mutism\, social anxiety\, and extreme shyness. \n\n\n\nBased on 20+ years of clinical experience treating Selective Mutism as a social communication anxiety that is MORE than just not speaking\, we will help your child\, tween\, or teen build the social communication skills necessary for school\, the real world\, and at home. In addition to intensive parent management/training\, S-CAT® integrates components of behavioral-therapy\, Cognitive-behavioral therapy (CBT)\, and an insight-oriented approach to increase social communication and promote social confidence. \n\n\n\nThe CommuniCamp™ mission is two-fold: 1) Intensive Group Treatment and 2) Parent Education\, Training\, and Support. \n\n\n\nProfessionally trained counselors\, under the direction and supervision of our lead clinicians\, work directly with children/teens in a local school on social comfort and confidence to facilitate learning and exposure using evidenced-based social communication strategies. \n\n\n\nWhile your child is in treatment within a real classroom school\, we educate\, train\, role-play\, answer your questions\, and lead breakout support sessions so you (the parents and family members) can ask questions\, share stories\, receive support\, and feel confident implementing the goals and strategies you and your child learned at camp as soon as you get home. \n\n\n\nOne parent shared of the full-day training sessions\, “I am grateful beyond words for CommuniCamp™ and now being a part of this family\, I feel hopeful and inspired by this experience with everyone involved in this process!” \n\n\n\nTo learn more about the enrollment process\, go to www.CommuniCamp.org.Fill out the CommuniCamp interest Form.  \n\n\n\nCommuniCamp@SelectiveMutismCenter.org215-887-5748

SUMMARY:Online Selective Mutism Association Annual Conference 2021
DESCRIPTION:Virtual Conference \n\n\n\nThe Selective Mutism Association is excited to announce that\, in the interest of public health\, our annual conference will be held this year in a fully-virtual format! The conference will be a one- and a half day conference and will be held on October 2 and 3\, 2021. We are excited that this virtual format will allow us to continue to offer innovative\, meaningful content\, to share advances in the assessment and treatment of SM\, and to connect with a wider audience of participants from across the world. We are also pleased to share that\, for the first time\, the SMA 2021 conference is planning a dedicated track of content intended for individuals with SM (ages 17 and up). It will be a wonderful time of gathering for the selective mutism community to learn the latest in evidence-based information\, support one another and connect our community! \n\n\n\n \n\n\n\n\nDownload Agenda\n\n\n\n\n\n\nKeynote Address\n\n\n\nThe long and winding path to emerging adulthood\, Anne Marie Albano\, Ph.D.\n\n\n\nRaising children is not necessarily easy\, just ask any parent. From scraped knees to peer conflicts to the angst of college admissions\, parents are ready to manage their children’s occasional fears and tears. These occasional\, common\, and relatively benign bumps in the road are typically overshadowed by the joys\, successes\, fun\, and friendships that naturally develop over time. Yet\, for parents of children challenged by excessive anxiety or other mental and behavioral health concerns\, much more time is spent navigating\, arranging\, fixing\, and comforting the child as parents work constantly to clear a path for their child. Parenting\, however\, occurs over a substrate of development\, where the child’s independent interactions with the environment shape to refine skills and cognitive-emotional abilities that propel the child towards greater independence and self-confidence. For youth with anxiety and related disorders\, everyday tasks can feel insurmountable and result in ever more parental involvement. While CBT and medication are effective treatments for anxiety in youth (Walkup\, et al.\, 2008)\, long-term gains through the transition to adulthood are not maintained for nearly half of effectively treated youth (Ginsburg et al.\, 2014). Traditionally\, families have been of secondary focus or minimally involved in CBT\, with developmental milestones and age-appropriate functioning also not a primary target of treatment. The unique features of the environments and situations experienced by youth calls for specific attention of therapists to assist youth and their caretakers to understanding and meet the tasks of development as well as address anxiety and other mental health conditions. Central to treatment is for youth to take on the challenges of anxiety and daily living with appropriate parental guidance and support. Dr. Albano will discuss a model integrating the core components of effective CBT for anxiety in youth with novel components designed to address patient-caretaker dependency\, role transitions\, and attainment of behaviors necessary for greater independent functioning within the contexts that are unique to the child’s age. \n\n\n\n\n\nBiography\n\n\n\nAnne Marie Albano is Professor of Medical Psychology in Psychiatry at Columbia University and Founder of the Columbia University Clinic for Anxiety and Related Disorders and Clinical Site Director of New York Presbyterian Hospital’s Youth Anxiety Center\, and Executive Director of Modern Minds of Charleston\, SC. She received her Ph.D. from the University of Mississippi. Dr. Albano is a Fellow of the American Psychological Association\, Association for Behavioral and Cognitive Therapies (ABCT)\, Founding Fellow of the Academy of Cognitive Therapy\, a Beck Institute Scholar\, and is Board Certified in Clinical Child and Adolescent Psychology. She is the recipient of the 2015 ABCT Award for Outstanding Contributions by an Individual for Clinical Activities. Dr. Albano is a past President of the Society for Clinical Child and Adolescent Psychology of the American Psychological Association and also past-president of the Association for Behavioral and Cognitive Therapies (ABCT). She is past editor of Cognitive and Behavioral Practice and Associate Editor of the Journal of Consulting and Clinical Psychology. Dr. Albano was the inaugural editor of the journal “Evidence-Based Practice in Child and Adolescent Mental Health” published by the Society for Clinical Child and Adolescent Psychology. She has published more than 200 articles and chapters and is the co-author of several cognitive behavioral treatment manuals and of the Anxiety Disorders Interview Schedule for DSM-5\, Child and Parent Version\, all published by Oxford University Press. Dr. Albano served as a Principal Investigator of a 6-site\, National Institute of Mental Health-sponsored study entitled “Child/Adolescent Anxiety Multimodal Treatment Study” (CAMS) and the Extended Long Term Follow Up of CAMS (CAMELS) and also was a PI for the Treatments for Adolescents with Depression Study (TADS). Both trials examined the relative efficacy of CBT\, medication\, combination treatment\, and pill placebo in youth. Her book with Leslie Pepper\, You and Your Anxious Child: Free Your Child from Fears and Worries and Create a Joyful Family Life\, was a 2014 ABCT Self-Help Book Award winner and 2014 Self-Help Book Award winner from the American Society of Journalists and Authors. In 2015\, a new ABCT award was established in Dr. Albano’s name by a family to encourage the proliferation of evidence-based treatment\, the Anne Marie Albano Early Career Award for Excellence in the Integration of Science and Practice. \n\n\n\n\n\nDate and Location\n\n\n\nThe online live virtual conference will begin on Saturday\, October 2\, 2021 at 10:00am ET and conclude on Sunday\, October 3 by 5:00am ET.  \n\n\n\n\n\nConference Offers Professional\, Parent/Family\, Individuals with SM (Ages 17 and up) Track\n\n\n\nThe conference will offer presentations for professionals\, parents/family\, and individuals with SM\, but any person can attend any session that interests them. All registrants will have a choice of different presentations to attend. In addition to these sessions\, we will offer an Expert Q&A panel and a Hear Our Voices panel where people talk about their lives and recovery from SM.  \n\n\n\n\n\nContinuing Education\n\n\n\nPlease stay tuned for further information on Continuing Education updates. \n\n\n\n\n\nCanceled reservations will be accepted until September 15 and are subject to a $35.00 service fee. SUMMARY:Live Webinar Selective Mutism in the Schools: Resources for Supporting Intervention and Collaboration
DESCRIPTION:While the webinar will be geared toward educators and professionals working in school settings\, parents and treating providers may also find this information valuable in their collaboration work with schools. \n\n\n\nThe school setting is often one of the most significantly impacted locations for a child’s comfort speaking and is often the first place where selective mutism may be recognized. Research suggests that unaddressed and unsupported SM symptoms can lead to long-term impacts for a child across academic\, social\, and emotional functioning. Despite these impacts\, it can often be challenging for educators and professionals working in the school setting to know the best practices for supporting a child and making meaningful change through intervention. This webinar\, hosted by SMA Board Member and child psychologist Dr. Brittany Bice-Urbach\, will provide a) an overview of selective mutism symptoms and considerations for identifying SM in a school setting; b) practical treatment recommendations for addressing SM in a school setting; c) recommendations around collaboration across school team-members\, families\, and outside providers; and d) a highlight of the Selective Mutism Association Educator’s Toolkit which provides useful resources for educators and professionals in school settings. While the webinar will be geared toward educators and professionals working in school settings\, parents and treating providers may also find this information valuable in their collaboration work with schools. \n\n\n\nBrittany Bice-Urbach\, Ph.D.\n\n\n\nDr. Bice-Urbach is an Assistant Professor in the Department of Pediatrics at the Medical College of Wisconsin and a clinical psychologist at the Child Development Center\, at the Children’s Hospital of Wisconsin. She also has a clinical specialty in treating children and adolescents with anxiety disorders through cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT) with a primary focus on treating children with Selective Mutism. At the Child Development Center\, she has been offering assessment\, individual therapy\, and family/school consultation and training to support children with SM. She has participated in the Selective Mutism Training Institute and given several national presentations at the National Association for School Psychologists Annual Convention on the topic of addressing symptoms of SM in a school setting. She also has prioritized trainings for medical facilities and pediatricians on detecting symptoms of Selective Mutism and supporting children and families.
