If you need special accommodations to attend this training\, please email Dr. Lisa Kovac\, SMA Executive Director at info@selectivemutism.org prior to registering. \n\n\n\nProgram Overview \n\n\n\nThe Selective Mutism Training Institute (SMTI) is an in-depth 2-day training course for caregivers of children/youth (ages 3-17) diagnosed with selective mutism (SM). The workshop is intensive and skills-based with the goal of increasing caregiver competence in utilizing empirically-supported treatment strategies for SM. We maintain a low instructor to participant ratio to ensure adequate time for modeling and video role-play of the skills. Registration will be capped at 30 participants. \n\n\n\nThis is a unique opportunity for caregivers of children with Selective Mutism to learn cutting-edge\, innovative techniques to effectively address SM. Small group\, video consultation with the course instructors following the 2-day training is included in the cost\, allowing participants to further apply the skills in their own unique settings. \n\n\n\nThe workshop starts with providing a framework for understanding the development of SM\, highlighting the role of nature\, nurture\, temperament\, and developmental differences in the onset and maintenance of SM\, social anxiety\, and other common co-occurring disorders. Evidence-based behavioral and cognitive interventions will be covered in depth. This training will give you the skills needed to assess how and with whom your child is communicating in different contexts and help move those skills forward. In addition\, caregivers will learn treatment strategies to improve family interactions and child participation in extracurricular activities\, to negotiate playdates with other children\, and to solicit help from others to support your child’s progress. This training will also cover critical school intervention and how to help your children succeed in this environment.  \n\n\n\nIn addition to traditional (e.g.\, weekly) treatment\, other treatment formats will be discussed\, including intensive treatments\, group-based interventions\, and school consultation. Parental self-care\, practical applications of treatment (e.g.\, playdates)\, and accessing additional support will also be reviewed.  \n\n\n\nProgram Objectives \n\n\n\nAfter this course\, participants will be able to describe ways in which selective mutism develops and appropriate timing for medication consultation.After this course\, participants will be able to state empirically-supported behavioral and cognitive treatment strategies\, including PCIT-SM (Parent-Child Interaction Therapy for Selective Mutism) techniques for selective mutism in school\, home\, and public (social) settings.After this course\, participants will be able to list three strategies to effectively engage school personnel and educational staff when implementing relevant treatment strategies specific to youth with selective mutism.After this course\, participants will be able to list various forms of caregiver self-care when supporting children with selective mutism.\n\n\n\nAudience \n\n\n\nParticipants who would benefit from this training include all caregivers of children with selective mutism. This training course is not intended for professionals. \n\n\n\nPrior experience: The SMTI course is primarily intended for those with beginner and intermediate exposure to work with SM. \n\n\n\nPresenter Information \n\n\n\nBrittany Bice-Urbach\, Ph.D.\, is an Assistant Professor in the Department of Pediatrics at the Medical College of Wisconsin and a clinical psychologist at the Child Development Center\, a developmental clinic through Children’s Hospital of Wisconsin. Dr. Bice-Urbach has a clinical specialty in treating children and adolescents with anxiety disorders through cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT) with a primary focus on treating children with Selective Mutism. At the Child Development Center\, she has developed a SM program offering assessment\, individual therapy\, group treatment\, and family/school consultation and training to support children with Selective Mutism. She is involved in supervision of student trainees and has given several national presentations at the National Association for School Psychologists Annual Convention on the topic of addressing symptoms of Selective Mutism in a school setting. She also has prioritized training for medical facilities and pediatricians on detecting symptoms of Selective Mutism and supporting children and their families through the journey in finding appropriate treatment resources. Dr. Bice-Urbach also serves on the Board of Directors of the Selective Mutism Association. \n\n\n\nRachel Busman\, Psy.D.\, ABPP\, is a licensed clinical psychologist and the Senior Director of the Child & Adolescent Anxiety and Related Disorders Program at Cognitive and Behavioral Consultants (CBC). Dr. Busman has extensive experience providing cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT) and other evidenced-based treatment to children\, teenagers and young adults struggling with anxiety disorders and other related mental health disorders. Dr. Busman has extensive experience in the assessment and treatment of Selective Mutism and runs Voices Rising\, an intensive group based SM program. Prior to joining CBC\, Dr. Busman was the senior director of the Anxiety Disorders Center and Director of the Selective Mutism Service at the Child Mind Institute\, in addition to the Director of Brave Buddies. Dr. Busman is the former president of the Selective Mutism Association\, the nation’s largest network of professionals\, families\, and individuals with selective mutism. She is certified in PCIT-SM and is a within agency trainer. Dr. Busman is also certified by the American Board of Professional Psychology in Clinical Psychology and Clinical Child and Adolescent Psychology. \n\n\n\nAileen Herrera\, M.S.\, LMHC\, is a Licensed Mental Health Counselor and the Clinical Director of the Mental Health Interventions and Technology (MINT) Anxiety Program at the Center for Children and Families (CCF) at Florida International University. She has extensive clinical training in cognitive and behavioral treatments for children and adolescents\, with a special emphasis on selective mutism. Aileen supervises student trainees and provides weekly and intensive treatment in English and Spanish for children and teens with anxiety and directs specialty programs for youth with selective mutism. Aileen runs the Brave Bunch Summer Treatment program at FIU\, an intensive group-based SM program. She also serves on the Board of Directors of the Selective Mutism Association.

In addition to her private practice\, Innovations 4 Learning\, Desiree also taught in the public school setting for 22 years as both a special day class teacher and resource specialist. Working in the public school setting taught Desiree the importance of advocating for students and families. She strives to build collaborative relationships with schools in ways that best meet the learning needs of her students. Desiree attended Holy Names University in Oakland\, California earning a bachelor’s degree in sociology and human services\, two teaching credentials and a master’s degree in Educational Therapy.  While attending Holy Names\, Desiree also gained invaluable experience working with students at Raskob Learning Institute and Day School.  Her professional affiliations include the Association of Educational Therapists\, the International Dyslexia Association\, the Learning Disabilities Association of America and the National Association of Special Education Teachers. When not working\, Desiree enjoys a good book\, a great cup of coffee and a cuddle with her two Siamese cats\, Tally and Lila. She also loves amazing dinners with friends and a night out at a great concert. \n\n\n\nChristy Tadros\, LPCC \n\n\n\nChristy Tadros is a Licensed Professional Clinical Counselor and holds a Master’s degree in Counseling Psychology and Education from Teacher’s College of Columbia University. Prior to her graduation and professional education in New York City\, Ms. Tadros received her BA in Psychology from the University of California\, Berkeley. Her areas of expertise include working with children with selective mutism\, anxiety\, ADHD and disruptive behavior disorders. She began her work with children with selective mutism\, training with Dr. Steven Kurtz at his practice in New York City. She has since done several embedded school and home intensives\, and she has led intensive\, therapeutic programs for young children and teenagers with selective mutism. Christy runs the selective mutism program at her clinic in the San Francisco Bay Area\, called WestCoast Therapy and Wellness\, where she provides individual and family based intensive therapy for children with selective mutism and runs an annual intensive program. She has a special interest in making treatment accessible and culturally sensitive to all children\, teens and families.

DESCRIPTION:Weekly Virtual Conversation Groups \n\n\n\n\n\nGrowing Minds Psychology \n\n\n\nWeekly Virtual Conversation Groups \n\n\n\nApril 7th-May 12th @ 5PM EST \n\n\n\nGrowing Minds Psychology offers virtual conversation groups led by Dr. Carly Mayer. These virtual groups are available for children ages 7-10 who are struggling with peer interactions due to selective mutism and/or social anxiety. This group is appropriate for children who have already made gains in treatment\, but are struggling with higher-level goals that allow for more meaningful\, fluent friendships. Activities focus on fluent conversations\, responding to and asking questions\, sharing personal information\, and making decisions. \n\n\n\nThe group runs for 6 weeks and an 1-hour initial screener is required prior to enrolling in group. Group costs are $200/session. Our clinicians are licensed in NY\, IL\, & VT. Consideration for participation in groups for children in other states is made on an individual basis. The speakers will specifically discuss what strategies to use 1) when the child is not yet verbal at all\, 2) when the child is starting to speak\, and 3) when the child is consistently verbal and ready for higher level speaking goals. She is the Senior Director of the Child & Adolescent Anxiety & Related Disorders Program at Cognitive Behavioral Consultants (CBC)\, where she runs Voices Rising\, an intensive group-based program for children with SM. Prior to joining CBC\, she ran Brave Buddies\, an internationally recognized SM program at the Child Mind Institute. She has extensive experience providing cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT) to children\, teenagers\, and young adults struggling with psychiatric disorders\, school difficulties\, and behavioral problems. Dr. Busman is certified in Parent Child Interaction Therapy for SM (PCIT-SM) and is an interagency trainer. She is the past president of the SMA and continues to actively serve on the board. \n\n\n\n\n\nEmily Doll\, MA\, MS\, CCC-SLPEmily Doll is a licensed speech-language pathologist who currently works in an elementary school in Eastern PA. Her caseload includes students in grades K-5 with a variety of social\, emotional\, cognitive\, and academic needs\, including students with selective mutism. Emily also participates as a counselor at the Child Mind Institute’s Brave Buddies programs for children with selective mutism. Prior to working as a speech pathologist\, Emily taught preschool for 10 years and worked one-on-one with a student with selective mutism in this setting. Emily received her M.A. in Applied Developmental Psychology with a focus on Language Acquisition from George Mason University and her M.S. in Speech-Language Pathology from East Stroudsburg University. She continues to conduct and collaborate in research within the speech pathology field through East Stroudsburg University\, where she also serves as a guest lecturer for graduate and undergraduate classes. DESCRIPTION:During our 50-minute in person group sessions\, the following will be covered for pre-K-early elementary: listen and follow directions\, ask and use names\, greet friends\, share and give turns\, ask friends to play\, join ongoing games\, keep cool during play\, be a good sport\, transition to new play activities\, ask and give help\, use good volume control\, maintain personal boundaries.  \n\n\n\nFor our tween and teens (MS & HS) we will cover: how to use appropriate conversation skills\, find common interests by trading information\, appropriate use of humor\, enter and exit conversations between peers\, handle rejection\, teasing\, and bullying\, handle rumors and gossip\, be a good host/friends during get-togethers\, make phone calls to friends\, choose appropriate friends\, be a good sport\, handle arguments and disagreements\, change a bad reputation (for middle and high school groups). Each group will meet for a total of 10 sessions.  A screening appointment is required for new participants. \n\n\n\nFor more information or to register for a screening:Call Simply Psychology\, LLC on 602-428-2838

SUMMARY:Online Selective Mutism Training Institute
DESCRIPTION:Program Overview\n\n\n\nThe Selective Mutism Training Institute (SMTI) is an in-depth 2-day training course for professionals working with children diagnosed with selective mutism (SM). The workshop is intensive\, and skills-based with the goal of increasing competence in providing empirically-supported treatment of SM to professionals with beginner and intermediate exposure and skills in assessing and treating SM. We maintain a high instructor to participant ratio to ensure adequate time for modeling and video role-play of the skills. \n\n\n\nThis is a unique opportunity for mental health professionals\, speech-language professionals and graduate-level trainees to learn cutting-edge\, innovative techniques to effectively treat children with SM. Small group\, video consultation with the course instructors following the 2-day training is included in the cost\, allowing participants to further apply the skills in their own unique clinical settings. \n\n\n\nThe workshop starts with providing a framework for understanding the etiology of SM\, highlighting the role of nature\, nurture\, temperament\, and developmental differences in the onset and maintenance of SM\, social anxiety\, and other common comorbidities. Strategies for behavioral\, developmental\, and language assessment will be reviewed\, including how to conduct observations of children with SM. Evidence-based interventions will be covered in depth\, including behavioral strategies such as stimulus fading\, shaping\, positive reinforcement\, and parent education/coaching. State-of-the-science interventions\, such as intensive treatments\, group-based interventions\, and school consultation will also be taught. Speech and language conceptualization\, assessment\, and interventions will also be reviewed. \n\n\n\n\n\nProgram Objectives\n\n\n\nAfter this course\, participants will be able to describe etiologies related to selective mutism and appropriate timing for medication consultation.After this course\, participants will be able to describe effective assessment measures and procedures in the evaluation of children with selective mutism.After this course\, participants will be able to list levels of communication from nonvocal to spontaneous vocalization in treating children with selective mutism.After this course\, participants will be able to state empirically-supported behavioral and cognitive treatment including self-modeling\, and PCIT-SM (Parent-Child Interaction Therapy for Selective Mutism) techniques for selective mutism in school\, home\, and public (social) settings.\n\n\n\n\n\nAudience\n\n\n\nParticipants must be either independently licensed or certified\, or matriculating in a supervised graduate program in clinical psychology\, school psychology\, counseling\, social work\, applied behavior analysis\, or speech-language pathology (Mental Health Professionals: Psychologists\, LMHC\, LMFT\, LCSW; Medical/Healthcare Professional; Education Professionals). Please check back to this website for updates. \n\n\n\n\n\nPresenter Information\n\n\n\nJami Furr\, Ph.D.\n\n\n\nJami Furr\, Ph.D. is a Clinical Assistant Professor and Senior Psychologist in the Mental Health Interventions and Technology (MINT) Program\, and the Selective Mutism Program at the Center for Children and Families at Florida International University (FIU). Dr. Furr has extensive expertise in cognitive-behavioral treatments of childhood anxiety and disruptive behavior disorders\, with a focus on preschool mental health and intensive group treatment programs for children with selective mutism – directing the first randomized clinical trial of the intensive group behavioral treatment for selective mutism in young children. Dr. Furr received her M.A. and Ph.D. in Clinical Psychology from Temple University. Dr. Furr completed her clinical psychology internship at the NYU-Bellevue Clinical Psychology Internship Program and the NYU Child Study Center\, after which she completed an NIH-funded Postdoctoral Fellowship in Child Psychiatry at the NYU Child Study Center. \n\n\n\nAileen Herrera\, M.S.\, RMCI\n\n\n\nAileen Herrera\, M.S.\, LMHC\, is a Licensed Mental Health Counselor and the Clinical Director of the Mental Health Interventions and Technology (MINT) Anxiety Program at the Center for Children and Families (CCF) at Florida International University. She has extensive clinical training in cognitive and behavioral treatments for children and adolescents\, with a special emphasis on selective mutism. She supervises student trainees and provides weekly and intensive treatment in English and Spanish for children and teens with anxiety and directs specialty programs for youth with selective mutism. She also serves on the Board of Directors of the Selective Mutism Association. \n\n\n\nEmily Doll\, M.A.\, M.S.\, CCC-SLP\n\n\n\nEmily Doll is a licensed speech-language pathologist who currently works in an elementary school in Eastern PA. Her caseload includes students in grades K-5 with a variety of social\, emotional\, cognitive\, and academic needs\, including students with selective mutism. Emily also participates as a counselor at the Child Mind Institute’s Brave Buddies programs for children with selective mutism. \n\n\n\nPrior to working as a speech pathologist\, Emily taught preschool for 10 years and worked one-on-one with a student with selective mutism in this setting. Emily received her M.A. in Applied Developmental Psychology with a focus on Language Acquisition from George Mason University and her M.S. in Speech-Language Pathology from East Stroudsburg University. \n\n\n\nShe continues to conduct and collaborate in research within the speech pathology field through East Stroudsburg University\, where she also serves as a guest lecturer for graduate and undergraduate classes. View the registration link for all titles and descriptions of all talks. \n\n\n\n\n\nKeynote Address\n\n\n\nThe long and winding path to emerging adulthood\, Anne Marie Albano\, Ph.D. \n\n\n\nRaising children is not necessarily easy\, just ask any parent. From scraped knees to peer conflicts to the angst of college admissions\, parents are ready to manage their children’s occasional fears and tears. These occasional\, common\, and relatively benign bumps in the road are typically overshadowed by the joys\, successes\, fun\, and friendships that naturally develop over time. Yet\, for parents of children challenged by excessive anxiety or other mental and behavioral health concerns\, much more time is spent navigating\, arranging\, fixing\, and comforting the child as parents work constantly to clear a path for their child. Parenting\, however\, occurs over a substrate of development\, where the child’s independent interactions with the environment shape to refine skills and cognitive-emotional abilities that propel the child towards greater independence and self-confidence. For youth with anxiety and related disorders\, everyday tasks can feel insurmountable and result in ever more parental involvement. While CBT and medication are effective treatments for anxiety in youth (Walkup\, et al.\, 2008)\, long-term gains through the transition to adulthood are not maintained for nearly half of effectively treated youth (Ginsburg et al.\, 2014). Traditionally\, families have been of secondary focus or minimally involved in CBT\, with developmental milestones and age-appropriate functioning also not a primary target of treatment. The unique features of the environments and situations experienced by youth calls for specific attention of therapists to assist youth and their caretakers to understanding and meet the tasks of development as well as address anxiety and other mental health conditions. Central to treatment is for youth to take on the challenges of anxiety and daily living with appropriate parental guidance and support. Dr. Albano will discuss a model integrating the core components of effective CBT for anxiety in youth with novel components designed to address patient-caretaker dependency\, role transitions\, and attainment of behaviors necessary for greater independent functioning within the contexts that are unique to the child’s age. \n\n\n\nBiography\n\n\n\nAnne Marie Albano is Professor of Medical Psychology in Psychiatry at Columbia University and Founder of the Columbia University Clinic for Anxiety and Related Disorders and Clinical Site Director of New York Presbyterian Hospital’s Youth Anxiety Center\, and Executive Director of Modern Minds of Charleston\, SC. She received her Ph.D. from the University of Mississippi. Dr. Albano is a Fellow of the American Psychological Association\, Association for Behavioral and Cognitive Therapies (ABCT)\, Founding Fellow of the Academy of Cognitive Therapy\, a Beck Institute Scholar\, and is Board Certified in Clinical Child and Adolescent Psychology. She is the recipient of the 2015 ABCT Award for Outstanding Contributions by an Individual for Clinical Activities. Dr. Albano is a past President of the Society for Clinical Child and Adolescent Psychology of the American Psychological Association and also past-president of the Association for Behavioral and Cognitive Therapies (ABCT). She is past editor of Cognitive and Behavioral Practice and Associate Editor of the Journal of Consulting and Clinical Psychology. Dr. Albano was the inaugural editor of the journal “Evidence-Based Practice in Child and Adolescent Mental Health” published by the Society for Clinical Child and Adolescent Psychology. She has published more than 200 articles and chapters and is the co-author of several cognitive behavioral treatment manuals and of the Anxiety Disorders Interview Schedule for DSM-5\, Child and Parent Version\, all published by Oxford University Press. Dr. Albano served as a Principal Investigator of a 6-site\, National Institute of Mental Health-sponsored study entitled “Child/Adolescent Anxiety Multimodal Treatment Study” (CAMS) and the Extended Long Term Follow Up of CAMS (CAMELS) and also was a PI for the Treatments for Adolescents with Depression Study (TADS). Both trials examined the relative efficacy of CBT\, medication\, combination treatment\, and pill placebo in youth. Her book with Leslie Pepper\, You and Your Anxious Child: Free Your Child from Fears and Worries and Create a Joyful Family Life\, was a 2014 ABCT Self-Help Book Award winner and 2014 Self-Help Book Award winner from the American Society of Journalists and Authors.
