SUMMARY:Webinar Beyond Answering Questions: Targeting Higher-Level Social Language Goals with Students with Selective Mutism
DESCRIPTION:Register herehttps://us06web.zoom.us/webinar/register/WN_0Yiu36B1SeCAGl9r_HZDxQ \n\n\n\nOnce students with selective mutism are able to answer questions consistently\, what comes next? This session explores how to move beyond simple verbal responding to target more challenging social language skills\, such as using greetings and farewells\, social niceties\, compromising\, initiating conversations\, stating opinions\, and self-advocacy. These higher-level skills are critical for allowing students to participate in meaningful\, age-appropriate interactions with peers and adults in the school setting and beyond. Participants will learn strategies to target these skills with their students and discuss practical activities and exposure tasks that can be completed in various settings. Sample goals and time for questions will be provided. Learning Objectives: 1. State 5 common higher-level social language goals appropriate for students with selective mutism who have progressed beyond initial verbal responding 2. Create functional activities to support skills like compromising\, expressing opinions\, and self-advocacy within school and peer interactions 3. Develop relevant SMART goals that address these higher-level skills For SLPs: ASHA Professional Development Hours (PDHs) If you plan to submit this webinar for Professional Development Hours (PDHs)\, SMA is happy to provide you with a certificate of completion upon request. You must be logged in to the webinar for the entire presentation in order to receive a certificate of completion. Please note: PDHs are self-reported and maintained by the participant. This course is not registered for ASHA CEUs through the ASHA CE Registry. However\, PDHs can be applied toward your ASHA certification renewal. SMA does not guarantee PDH approval\, and registrants are requested to verify with their accrediting agency. To request a certificate of completion\, reach out to Kristin Leos at kleos@selectivemutism.org.

SUMMARY:Targeted Practice Ages 6 to 12 in New York\, NY
DESCRIPTION:Every Thursday from 4-5 pm \n\n\n\nIn person at the Child Mind Institute in NYC (50th and 3rd) \n\n\n\nKayla Samuels\, kayla.samuels@alnardo-martinezchildmind-org \n\n\n\nWe offer weekly “Targeted Practice” groups for children with selective mutism as part of our comprehensive treatment. These groups are designed to target children’s brave talking goals around peer-to-peer engagement\, speaking in front of a group\, and behavioral group participation. Groups run for an hour each week and are crafted to build continuity and help the child build their brave talking practice in an environment outside of a one-on-one clinical session. There is a trained adult for every 1-2 children in the group.
