Throughout the week\, children receive support to communicate and participate in activities they would encounter on a typical school day. Our program is led by Christy Tadros\, who has several years of experience running similar programs. She was trained as a counselor in the Brave Buddies Program at the Child Mind Institute\, and worked with Dr. Steven Kurtz for several years\, co-leading the Mighty Mouth Kids Program in NYC. It will provide an explanation of how these common co-existing conditions can present in children. It will also give a comprehensive overview on treatment strategies for ADHD including support at home and school as well as medication management. \n\n\n\nSpeakers\n\n\n\nRupal Upadhyay\, MD\, FAAP \n\n\n\nAssociates in Pediatrics \n\n\n\nDr. Rupal is a Board-Certified Pediatrician in the Northwest Suburbs of Chicago where she lives with her husband\, 3 children\, and adorable puppy. She completed her undergraduate studies at The University of Chicago\, in Chicago\, IL. She then went on to The University of Illinois in Chicago for medical school. She did her training in General Pediatrics at Advocate Hope Children’s Hospital in Oak Lawn\, IL. Dr. Rupal is in private practice with Associates in Pediatrics and is affiliated with St. Alexius Medical Center\, Advocate Sherman Hospital\, and Northwest Community Healthcare. \n\n\n\nEleanor Ezell\, LCSW \n\n\n\nEleanor Ezell\, LCSW\, is a licensed therapist in Tennessee and is the Founder and Clinical Director at Child and Family Therapy Collective based in Nashville\, TN. She has extensive experience providing evidence-based therapy to children and young teens who struggle with selective mutism\, anxiety\, ADHD and disruptive behavior disorders\, and a wide range of developmental delays. She attended New York University for graduate training where she trained with and worked very closely with Dr. Steven Kurtz over 5 years treating children with selective mutism and related disorders. She completed a two-year Developmental Behavioral Pediatrics Fellowship at The University of Mississippi Medical Center where she also \n\n\n\nBrittany Bice-Urbach\, PhD \n\n\n\nDepartment of Pediatrics at the Medical College of Wisconsin \n\n\n\nDr. Bice-Urbach is an Assistant Professor in the Department of Pediatrics at the Medical College of Wisconsin and has been working as a clinical psychologist at the Child Development Center\, a developmental clinic through Children’s Hospital of Wisconsin\, in the School Performance Program. She completed her graduate training at the University of Wisconsin-Madison School Psychology Program\, her internship at Illinois State University’s Psychological Services Center\, and her Post-Doctoral fellowship at Connections Day School\, a therapeutic day school in Illinois. DESCRIPTION:Times: 9 am – 2 pm \n\n\n\nTarget Audience: Tweens and Teens with SM \n\n\n\nLocation: Princeton\, NJ \n\n\n\nWeSpeak is an intensive behavioral group intervention for pre-teens and teens with SM and significant social anxiety. Simulating all aspects of the school and social environment\, WeSpeak provides the opportunity to practice talking across a variety of contexts – targeting many of the verbal and social demands/expectations of this age group. Parent training is also included so that parents can learn the necessary tools to support and coach their kids after the program. SUMMARY:Mighty Mouth Kids- Sarasota Intensive Selective Mutism Camp Ages 4 to 10
DESCRIPTION:Parent and Child Psychological Services- Sarasota\, FL \n\n\n\nMMK-SRQ is a 5-day SM camp based on the MMK model developed by Dr. Steven Kurtz. Our camp director Dr. Kate Gibson was the Director of Training at Kurtz Psychology from 2019-2022. Our camp replicates a school/camp setting with a 1:1 counselor to camper ratio. Campers will practice brave talking in indoor and outdoor group play and in structured activities. They will have the opportunity to enjoy snacks and lunch with peers\, to practice raising their hand and participating\, and asking for help in a classroom setting. Campers will do 3 different presentations in front of the group over the course of the camp week\, and will ask and answer questions about the presentations. Campers will practice speaking in community settings (e.g.\, pizza lunch & shaved ice truck). They will also attend a field trip. The camp week is Monday July 22nd through Friday July 26th\, 9 AM – 2 PM. \n\n\n\nThe week prior to camp (Tuesday July 16th to Friday July 19th) is reserved for lead-in sessions to get kiddos ready for camp and will be scheduled separately for each child. \n\n\n\nParent training and live parent coaching are an integral part of our camp experience. AC focuses heavily on verbalizing in the school setting and generalizing across school staff. Parents are provided with parent training separately in order to maximize the time we have with the students in the school setting\, verbally responding to staff without relying on their parents’ presence. This increases the child’s confidence in themselves and less dependence on their parents. Campers’ educators are encouraged to attend the Parent & Teacher Training that occurs on 7/27/2024 (and which is recorded for those who can’t attend) so that the child’s home and school environment can learn the PCIT-SM prompting skills and learn how to reduce enabling in an effective way to maximize treatment carry over into the school setting. Parent training also takes place during camp week on 7/29-8/01 from 12pm-1pm and on 8/02 1pm-2pm. These sessions are also recorded for parents who are unable to attend. The child’s teacher\, school social worker\, speech pathologist\, or anyone else from the child’s team is invited to come observe the skills in action during camp week to help facilitate their learning. Treating the child is not enough – we aim to train parents and educators\, too. \n\n\n\nWe rent out an actual school and use actual classrooms for this school simulation\, and the experience is further enhanced by other camps occurring in the same school\, really maximizing the opportunity to generalize speaking across adults\, peers\, places\, and activities.  \n\n\n\nIn the afternoons\, we load a school bus to field trip events which exposes children to talking to the bus driver\, to community members at our field trips\, and to community peers\, providing opportunities for generalizing speaking outside the school setting as well. Peer-to-peer interaction and social skills are also addressed in the field trip activities. \n\n\n\nTreating the child alone is not enough; treating the child’s ecosystem maximizes treatment effect. SUMMARY:Kids Out Loud Summer Camp Program in Washington\, DC
DESCRIPTION:Washington\, DC Metro Area/ Maryland \n\n\n\nKids Out Loud is a 5-day therapeutic camp experience that provides intensive behavioral treatment for children between the ages of four and eight diagnosed with selective mutism. We strive to help children practice and build confidence in brave speech and social interaction\, getting a jump start before the new school year. Each child receives a 1:1 trained counselor that works on individualized goals\, including peer-to-peer interactions\, speech in small and large groups\, presenting during structured activities\, social skills during play\, and self-advocacy. Engaging and hands-on activities include group games\, scavenger hunts\, arts and crafts\, music\, and special events. We create a school-like experience through circle time\, center work\, and show and tell. Two child psychologists direct the Kids Out Loud Program\, Dr. Veronica Raggi and Dr. Courtney Keeton\, who have over thirty years of combined experience treating selective mutism. \n\n\n\nKids Out Loud runs from 9 am-2 pm\, Monday through Friday\, July 29th through August 2nd\, 2024. Parent training sessions will be live via Zoom from 12-1 pm the Monday\, Wednesday\, and Friday prior to the camp week. Live parent coaching during camp will take place from 12-2 pm during family time on the last day of camp. Teacher training and a school fade-in are included in the camp package. Camp is located in the lower elementary school building of St. Andrew’s Episcopal School at 8804 Postoak Road\, Potomac\, MD 20854. DESCRIPTION:Since 2019\, our Confident Kids Camp in the DC Metro area has been offering an intensive 5-day program for children with Selective Mutism (SM). The camp is designed to encourage children to transfer their speaking abilities from the clinic to everyday situations. We create a fun environment that helps reduce fear through activities that mimic school experiences\, such as circle time and recess\, as well as during visits from special guests like therapy dogs and firefighters. As an excellent complement to individual therapy\, our camp provides a boost of bravery just in time for the new school year. Each child is matched with their own adult counselor to support them in reaching their speech goals. Meanwhile\, parents can take advantage of on-site training\, live coaching\, and the chance to connect with others. Our dedicated and skilled interdisciplinary team cannot wait for camp this summer!

SUMMARY:Mighty Mouth Kids - New Jersey (MMK-NJ) Selective Mutism Camp for Children Ages 3 to 8
DESCRIPTION:Caring Cove- Chatham\, NJ \n\n\n\nMMK-NJ is a 5-day SM camp based on the MMK model developed by Dr. Steven Kurtz.  Our camp replicates a school/camp setting with a 1:1 counselor to camper ratio. Campers will practice brave talking in indoor and outdoor activities. They will have the opportunity to enjoy snacks and lunch with peers\, practice raising their hand and participating\, and ask for help in a classroom setting. Campers will complete different presentations in front of the group and will practice asking and answering questions about their presentations. Campers will also practice speaking in community settings (e.g.\, pizza place\, ice cream shop) and will practice engaging in extracurricular activities and celebrations. They will also attend a field trip to the zoo. They will offer tips and strategies that caregivers can use when fading in evaluators and also when advocating for evaluators withexperience testing children with SM. \n\n\n\nLearning Objectives1) Describe the differences between testing completed by the school districtand neuropsychological testing2) Name two strategies to use during a fade in with an evaluator3) Discuss limitations of testing when using only nonverbal measures \n\n\n\nSpeakers: \n\n\n\nRachel Busman\, PsyD\, ABPP \n\n\n\nDr. Rachel Busman is a clinical psychologist specializing in the evaluation and treatment of anxiety and mood disorders in children and adolescents. She is the Senior Director of the Child & Adolescent Anxiety & Related Disorders Program at Cognitive Behavioral Consultants (CBC)\, where she runs Voices Rising\, an intensive group-based program for children with SM. Prior to joining CBC\, she ran Brave Buddies\, an internationally recognized SM program at the Child Mind Institute. She has extensive experience providing cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT) to children\, teenagers\, and young adults struggling with psychiatric disorders\, school difficulties\, and behavioral problems. Dr. Busman is certified in Parent Child Interaction Therapy for SM (PCIT-SM) and is an interagency trainer. She is the past president of the SMA and continues to actively serve on the board. \n\n\n\nBrooke Catanzaro\, PsyD \n\n\n\nDr Catanzaro is an Associate Neuropsychologist at Cognitive and Behavioral Consultants. She has worked with a range of individuals including those with a variety of neurodevelopmental concerns\, including attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder (ADHD)\, autism spectrum disorder\, language-based learning challenges\, learning disabilities\, and social/emotional difficulties. Olivia is a therapist who currently treats children with SM\, and provides parents and school staff with the training and skills to support these children.
