Olivia worked for 10 years in the field of education in grades K-12 and brings this breadth of experience to her work.  \n\n\n\nGroup Topics Include: \n\n\n\n\nSelective Mutism 101 Skills \n\n\n\nFading in other children and adults\n\n\n\nCommunity exposures\n\n\n\nSchool Advocacy\n\n\n\nPeer communication and Playdates\n\n\n\n\nFee: $850 for all 6 sessions  \n\n\n\n *Need-based scholarships available. His work focuses on digital mental health\, telehealth\, intensive formats\, and parenting approaches for treating anxiety-related problems such as behavioral avoidance\, irritability\,family accommodation\, and selective mutism. Dr. Comer is Professor of Psychology at Florida International University where he directs the NIH-funded Mental health Interventions & Novel Therapeutics (MINT) Program and the SAMHSA-funded Network for Enhancing Wellness in Disaster-Affected Youth (NEW DAY). Indeed\, reward systems are incorporated into SM treatment packages much more frequently than other common behavioral intervention strategies such as shaping\, hierarchical exposure\, and stimulus fading (incorporated in 90% 57%\, 48%\, and 43% of treatment studies on SM between 2005-2015 respectively; Zakszeski & DuPaul\, 2017). \n\n\n\nMany schools employ a Multi-tiered System of Support (MTSS) framework in order to effectively match a student’s level of need with an appropriate level\, and type\, of support. This often includes the use of reinforcers (e.g.\, tangible items\, special privileges\, tailored praise) to help reinforce a student’s use of a new skill and/or progress they make towards an individualized goal (Center on Positive Behavioral Intervention Supports\, 2021). While school staff may have familiarity with rewards-based systems\, they may have less experience in tailoring these approaches to best benefit students with selective mutism. Furthermore\, school staff may encounter barriers in the adoption and implementation of reward systems.This is evidenced by current research\, which suggests that most students with SM have received accommodations and/or intervention supports via an Individualized Education Plan (IEP)\, Section 504 Plan\, or an informal plan (Boneff-Peng\, et al\, 2013). However\, targeted behavioral reinforcement techniques\, such as reward systems\, are not reported to be frequently employed in school settings for students with SM (Boneff-Peng\, et al\, 2013).Katelyn Reed and Dr. Hicks-Hoste will offer rationale for the inclusion of a reward system in a robust intervention program for students with SM. They will discuss strategies to maximize effective adoption and implementation for school staff\, as well as provide examples of reward-based strategies at both the class and individual student level. Finally\, they will address common barriers for its use (e.g.\, aligning stakeholders\, managing concerns about intrinsic and extrinsic motivation\, guarding against “bribery\,” etc.)  \n\n\n\nLearning Objectives \n\n\n\n\nIdentify specific measurable goals and possible reinforcement systems for students with SM in the school setting.\n\n\n\nDetermine appropriate means to implement and track progress over time when implementing a reward system in the school setting.\n\n\n\nIdentify means to gradually reduce the level of reinforcement support over time in reward systems.\n\n\n\n\nTaylor Hicks-Hoste\, LP\, NCSP \n\n\n\nTaylor Hicks-Hoste is a licensed psychologist (LP) in the states of Michigan and California\, as well as a Nationally Certified School Psychologist (NCSP). She received her Ph.D. in school psychology from Michigan State University. Her professional experiences span across both school and clinic settings. As a school psychologist\, she has serviced students\, families and teachers\, grades preschool through twelfth grade. She has also worked as a countywide behavioral health consultant\, in which she has partnered with local districts in the promotion of mental health awareness and in the direct provision of school-based mental health supports to students. Taylor’s clinical work at Thriving Minds in Michigan includes the treatment of children\, teens\, and families with an emphasis on anxiety-based disorders such as selective mutism\, separation anxiety\, and school refusal. \n\n\n\nSpeaker: Katelyn Reed\, MS\, LLP \n\n\n\nKatelyn Reed\, M.S. is a Limited Licensed Psychologist at Thriving Minds Family Services\, located in Chelsea\, MI. She completed her Master’s degree in Clinical Behavioral Psychology at Eastern Michigan University where she focused on evidence-based behavioral and cognitive behavioral interventions for children and adolescents. Through her work at Thriving Minds\, Katelyn specializes in treating children with Selective Mutism via traditional weekly therapy\, intensive therapy (i.e.\, 15-20 hours of treatment in one week)\, and group therapy models. Through an exposure therapy model\, children with Selective Mutism are encouraged to be brave in talking with new people and in new settings. Katelyn emphasizes collaborative care and frequently works in partnership with parents and schools to best assist clients and to promote growth through education on appropriate goals and interventions. Katelyn is also the Assistant Director for Confident Kids Camp\, an intensive week-long treatment program for children with Selective Mutism. In addition to her work with children with Selective Mutism\, Katelyn provides evidenced-based therapy for children with other anxiety disorders\, depressive disorders\, and disruptive behavior disorders. \n\n\n\nKatelyn has been a professional member of the Selective Mutism Association since 2013 and joined the Board of Directors in 2017. Currently she serves as the President of SMA. She is passionate about spreading awareness about Selective Mutism and about effective treatment techniques and is excited to contribute to the mission of SMA through her involvement on the Board of Directors.

Comer\, Ph.D. \n\n\n\nOne of the field’s leading authorities on the nature and treatment of pediatric anxiety disorders\, Dr. Comer leads a funded research program examining innovative and nontraditional strategies for expanding the reach\, scope\, and responsiveness of children’s mental healthcare. His work focuses on digital mental health\, telehealth\, intensive formats\, and parenting approaches for treating anxiety-related problems such as behavioral avoidance\, irritability\,family accommodation\, and selective mutism. Dr. Comer is Professor of Psychology at Florida International University where he directs the NIH-funded Mental health Interventions & Novel Therapeutics (MINT) Program and the SAMHSA-funded Network for Enhancing Wellness in Disaster-Affected Youth (NEW DAY). He’s written over 250 scholarly publications\, serves as Editor-in-Chief of Behavior Therapy\, is past-president of the Society of Clinical Psychology (APA Division12)\, and chairs the semi-annual Miami International Child and Adolescent Mental Health (MICAMH) Conference. SUMMARY:Selective Mutism Winter Group Intensive

Email us at info@therapyandwellness.com for more details. \n\n\n\nWho is it for? \n\n\n\n• Children ages 4 – 10 years old with a diagnosis of selective mutism or  who are unable to speak in social situations outside of their home. \n\n\n\nWhere? \n\n\n\nBerkeley\, CA \n\n\n\nOur  Winter Group Intensive is a 3-weekend program designed to give children practice talking in a school environment with new peers and adults. Throughout the weekends (Saturday and Sunday)\, children receive support to communicate and participate in activities they would encounter on a typical school day. Our program is led by Christy Tadros\, who has several years of experience running similar programs. She was trained as a counselor in the Brave Buddies Program at the Child Mind Institute\, and worked with Dr. Steven Kurtz for several years\, co-leading the Mighty Mouth Kids Program in NYC. \n\n\n\nSome of the activities your child will get to practice: \n\n\n\n• Working and talking with a partner \n\n\n\n• Joining in cooperative and group play during recess \n\n\n\n• Giving several presentations \n\n\n\n• Self-Advocacy\, for example\, asking for help or to use the bathroom \n\n\n\n• Going on a fieldtrip \n\n\n\n• Speaking to people in the community\, i.e at the library or the ice cream store \n\n\n\n• Practice reading assessments \n\n\n\n• Get comfortable with school celebration\, such as birthday parties \n\n\n\n• Take a visit to the dentist or school nurse \n\n\n\nAll activities involve practicing verbalizations with unfamiliar adults and peers. The primary goal is to generalize talking to as many people\, places\, and activities during the weekend. \n\n\n\nHow will my child do all these activities? \n\n\n\nEach child will receive 1:1 specialized support from a counselor assigned to working with them. Counselors break down each activity into small steps and provide rehearsal practice until the child is able to meet their goal for the day\, or the weekend. \n\n\n\nWhat if my child is in a different stage of progress than other children? \n\n\n\nIndividual goals are developed before the intensive and adapted each day\, throughout the day\, to meet the needs of each attendee. The team meets each Saturday and Sunday morning and evening to plan how to help each child meet their goals.

DESCRIPTION:Dakota Hornak\, dhornak@selectivemutismcenter.org \n\n\n\nOur 1-hour Guided Virtual Get-Togethers are a place for tweens and teens with social anxiety or Selective Mutism to build social comfort\, learn and practice evidence-based strategies\, and meet peers who share in your teen’s experience. With facilitation from a trained clinician\, attendees participate in planned games and activities that promote social engagement and initiation while in a fun\, comfortable\, and controlled environment. Join us virtually every Monday at 6 PM EST! Sessions are open to ages 10-18. Participants do not have to be patients of the SMart Center. Registration is $50 per session\, per attendee. Participants can choose to be on camera and/or use the chat feature – whatever is most comfortable. Parent participation is optional.

The many social obligations along with expectations for interacting with unfamiliar friends and family members and changes in routine can be overwhelming and anxiety provoking. In this webinar\, Dr. Becca Laptook and Dr. Rachel Merson will share strategies for parents and caregivers for managing the highs and lows of the holidays and for simultaneously helping their children practice being brave while still enjoying the special moments of the season. The webinar will include tips for talking to friends and relatives about SM\, setting realistic expectations and achievable goals\, and preparing children for success. \n\n\n\nSpeakers: \n\n\n\nBecca Laptook\, PhD is a licensed clinical child psychologist who specializes in the treatment of childhood anxiety. She received her doctorate in clinical psychology from the State University of NY at Stony Brook and completed her clinical internship at NY Presbyterian-Columbia University Medical School and subsequent child postdoctoral fellowship at North Shore-Long Island Jewish Health System. Dr. Laptook is a Clinical Associate Professor in the Department of Psychiatry & Human Behavior as well as the Department of Pediatrics at the Warren Alpert Medical School of Brown University. She works at Rhode Island Hospital where she is a psychologist at the Hasbro Children’s Partial Hospital Program\, a day-treatment program for kids ages 6-18 coping with both psychiatric and medical illnesses. Dr. Laptook specializes in working with children and families and has a particular interest and expertise in early childhood\, childhood anxiety\, Selective Mutism\, child temperament\, parent-child interactions\, and Cognitive Behavioral Therapy. \n\n\n\nRachel Merson\, Psy.D. is the Clinical Director of the Child and Adolescent Fear and Anxiety Treatment Program at the Boston University Center for Anxiety and Related Disorders (Child CARD). Dr. Merson has extensive experience providing evidence-based treatment to children and adolescents with a range of anxiety disorders and co-occurring emotional and behavioral concerns. As Director of Child CARD’s Selective Mutism Program\, she oversees Brave Bunch\, Child CARD’s intensive group treatment program for young children with SM. In addition\, Dr. Merson is actively involved in providing supervision and training to Child CARD graduate students and trainees. She frequently conducts workshops with schools and community agencies on selective mutism and other topics related to child anxiety. Dr. Merson completed her undergraduate studies at the University of Virginia where she majored in Psychology and graduated with High Distinction. She went on to earn her Masters and Doctoral degrees in Clinical Psychology from the Graduate School of Applied and Professional Psychology (GSAPP) at Rutgers University.
