However\, in some cases\, the fade-in strategy alone isn’t enough\, or for a number of reasons\, may not be an option for clinicians to use in their setting. This webinar will review additional strategies that clinicians can use to help children establish speech in new situations and with new people\, along with applied examples of activities related to these techniques. This webinar is geared toward treating professionals\, counselors\, social workers\, speech-language pathologists\, educators and school professionals. Parents and caregivers may also find the information valuable as they navigate treatment. \n\n\n\nSpeaker: \n\n\n\nEmily Doll\, MA\, MS\, CCC-SLP \n\n\n\nEmily Doll is a licensed speech-language pathologist who currently works in an elementary school in Eastern PA. Her caseload includes students in grades K-5 with a variety of social\, emotional\, cognitive\, and academic needs\, including students with selective mutism. Emily also participates as a counselor at the Child Mind Institute’s Brave Buddies programs for children with selective mutism. Prior to working as a speech pathologist\, Emily taught preschool for 10 years and worked one-on-one with a student with selective mutism in this setting. Emily received her M.A. in Applied Developmental Psychology with a focus on Language Acquisition from George Mason University and her M.S. in Speech-Language Pathology from East Stroudsburg University. She continues to conduct and collaborate in research within the speech pathology field through East Stroudsburg University\, where she also serves as a guest lecturer for graduate and undergraduate classes. DESCRIPTION:Please note times are in Eastern Time. \n\n\n\nLive Virtual Conference\n\n\n\nRegister Now \n\n\n\nAgenda \n\n\n\nConference Information\n\n\n\nThe Selective Mutism Association’s annual conference will be on October 1 and 2\, 2022 and will be held in a fully-virtual format. This online approach allows us to continue to offer innovative\, meaningful content\, to share advances in the assessment and treatment of SM\, and to connect with a wider audience of participants from across the world. We are also pleased to announce that we are continuing our dedicated track of content intended for individuals with SM (ages 17 and up). It will be a wonderful time of gathering for the selective mutism community to learn the latest in evidence-based information\, support one another and connect our community! \n\n\n\nAll sessions will be recorded and available for later viewing for 60 days for those who register for the conference. Although we hope you can attend the conference live\, if you cannot do that\, you can watch all sessions at a later date. For professionals wishing to obtain continuing education credits\, please note that these credits can only be obtained if you attend live conference sessions–you can not watch recorded sessions and obtain continuing education credits. You will not be able to register for the conference after the conference has passed to watch recorded sessions\, so be sure to register prior to the conference. \n\n\n\nSpecial Note to all Individuals with SM: \n\n\n\nSMA recognizes that resources for older individuals who have SM are scarce and thus\, for individuals with SM (ages 17 and older)\, SMA will be offering the Individuals with SM track for FREE! Individuals with SM will be able to attend our Individual track sessions on Saturday and then be able to return for our Hear Our Voices panel and Expert Q&A session on Sunday. Presentations for the Individuals with SM track will only be offered on Saturday\, October 1\, 2022 and the Hear Our Voices and Expert Q&A panel will be offered on October 2\, 2022. \n\n\n\nIndividuals with SM (geared toward ages 17 and older) may register for this track for free on our registration page. Please note that those that choose this option will only have access to the Individual Track (including the Hear Our Voices and Expert Q&A panel) and will not have access to the professional and caregiver-friendly tracks. For those registrants who would like access to all talks\, including the professional\, caregiver-friendly\, and individual tracks\, you will need to register for the entire conference. \n\n\n\nKeynote Address\n\n\n\nHelping Behaviorally Inhibited Young Children Come out of their Shells\, Andrea Chronis-Tuscano\, Ph.D. \n\n\n\nBiography\n\n\n\nDr. Chronis-Tuscano is a Professor of Psychology at the University of Maryland and Director of the Maryland ADHD Program and UMD SUCCEEDS College ADHD Clinic. Dr. Chronis-Tuscano’s research focuses broadly on understanding early predictors of developmental outcomes for children with Attention- Deficit/Hyperactivity Disorder (including depression and alcohol/substance use) and developing novel treatments which target these early risk and protective factors. Much of this research has addressed issues related to maternal parenting and psychopathology (namely\, maternal depression and ADHD). A secondary line of research aims to examine the trajectory of young children displaying early behavioral inhibition\, including the development of psychopathology\, and to intervene by targeting key moderators of outcome (e.g.\, parenting and social relationships). \n\n\n\nDr. Chronis-Tuscano is the Past-President of the International Society for Research in Child and Adolescent Psychopathology; Associate Editor of the Journal of Consulting & Clinical Psychology; Fellow of the Association for Psychological Science; Fellow of the Association for Behavioral & Cognitive Therapies (ABCT); Fellow of the Society for Clinical Child & Adolescent Psychology (SCCAP); former Associate Editor of the Journal of Clinical Child & Adolescent Psychology; and standing member of the NIMH Mental Health Services Research (SERV) review committee. She is the recipient of multiple NIH grants and has served on several NIH review committees relevant to developmental psychopathology and interventions. \n\n\n\nDate and Location\n\n\n\nThe online live virtual conference will begin on Saturday\, October 1\, 2022 at 10:00 am ET and conclude on Sunday\, October 2 by 5:15 pm ET. \n\n\n\nConference Offers Professional\, Caregiver\, Individuals with SM (Ages 17 and up) Track The conference will offer presentations for professionals\, parents/family\, and individuals with SM\, but any person can attend any session that interests them. The workshop is intensive\, and skills-based with the goal of increasing competence in providing empirically-supported treatment of SM to professionals with beginner and intermediate exposure and skills in assessing and treating SM. We maintain a high instructor to participant ratio to ensure adequate time for modeling and video role-play of the skills. \n\n\n\nThis is a unique opportunity for mental health professionals\, speech-language professionals and graduate-level trainees to learn cutting-edge\, innovative techniques to effectively treat children with SM. Small group\, video consultation with the course instructors following the 2-day training is included in the cost\, allowing participants to further apply the skills in their own unique clinical settings. \n\n\n\nThe workshop starts with providing a framework for understanding the etiology of SM\, highlighting the role of nature\, nurture\, temperament\, and developmental differences in the onset and maintenance of SM\, social anxiety\, and other common comorbidities. Strategies for behavioral\, developmental\, and language assessment will be reviewed\, including how to conduct observations of children with SM. Evidence-based interventions will be covered in depth\, including behavioral strategies such as stimulus fading\, shaping\, positive reinforcement\, and parent education/coaching. State-of-the-science interventions\, such as intensive treatments\, group-based interventions\, and school consultation will also be taught. Speech and language conceptualization\, assessment\, and interventions will also be reviewed. \n\n\n\nProgram Objectives\n\n\n\nAfter this course\, participants will be able to describe etiologies related to selective mutism and appropriate timing for medication consultation.After this course\, participants will be able to describe effective assessment measures and procedures in the evaluation of children with selective mutism.After this course\, participants will be able to list levels of communication from nonvocal to spontaneous vocalization in treating children with selective mutism.After this course\, participants will be able to state empirically-supported behavioral and cognitive treatment including self-modeling\, and PCIT-SM (Parent-Child Interaction Therapy for Selective Mutism) techniques for selective mutism in school\, home\, and public (social) settings.After this course\, participants will be able to list three strategies to effectively engage school personnel and education systems to promote awareness and implementation of treatment strategies specific to youth with special needs and selective mutism.\n\n\n\nAudience\n\n\n\nParticipants must be either independently licensed or certified\, or matriculating in a supervised graduate program in clinical psychology\, school psychology\, counseling\, social work\, applied behavior analysis\, or speech-language pathology (Mental Health Professionals: Psychologists\, LMHC\, LMFT\, LCSW; Medical/Healthcare Professional; Education Professionals). She is the author of “Treating Selective Mutism as a Speech-Language Pathologist\,” as well as several webinars on the topic of selective mutism. \n\n\n\nEleanor Ezell\, LCSW\n\n\n\nEleanor Ezell\, LCSW\, is a licensed therapist in Tennessee and is the Founder and Clinical Director at Child and Family Therapy Collective based in Nashville\, TN. She has extensive experience providing evidence-based therapy to children and young teens who struggle with selective mutism\, anxiety\, ADHD and disruptive behavior disorders\, and a wide range of developmental delays. \n\n\n\nShe attended New York University for graduate training where she trained with and worked very closely with Dr. Steven Kurtz over 5 years treating children with selective mutism and related disorders. She completed a two-year Developmental Behavioral Pediatrics Fellowship at The University of Mississippi Medical Center where she also was personally grand funded to bring PCIT-SM and the Brave Buddies/Mighty Mouth Kids Camp model to the state of Mississippi. In the last 10 years\, she has participated in\, or replicated\, intensive treatment in New York\, California\, Mississippi and soon will replicate in Tennessee. Eleanor currently runs the selective mutism program at her Child and Family Therapy Collective in Nashville\, TN where she offers weekly sessions\, individual intensives and intensive group model treatment. \n\n\n\nEleanor is certified in Parent Child Interaction Therapy for SM (PCIT-SM) and certified PCIT-SM trainer. She has been involved in SMTI with SMA and enjoys working with the community to continue dissemination efforts to increase access to care. Eleanor has a very active clinical practice and is currently on the Board of Directors at SMA. \n\n\n\nTaylor Hicks-Hoste\, LP\, NCSP\n\n\n\nTaylor Hicks-Hoste is a Licensed Psychologist (LP) and Nationally Certified School Psychologist (NCSP) in the state of Michigan. She received her Ph.D. In school psychology from Michigan State University. She currently works as a Program Consultant for Behavioral Health for Livingston Educational Service Agency in Michigan. Her work includes partnering with local school districts in their promotion of mental health awareness and wellness to students\, teachers\, and families. It also includes providing school-based mental health services to students and consulting with their school teams. During the evenings\, Taylor engages in part-time clinical work at Thriving Minds Behavioral Health in Brighton\, MI. Her clinical interests include generalized anxiety\, selective mutism\, separation anxiety\, and school refusal. She utilizes evidence-based behavioral and cognitive treatment approaches to support children\, and aims to develop strong partnerships between families and schools. Each summer\, Taylor works at Confident Kids Camp\, an intensive week-long program for children with Selective Mutism. \n\n\n\nRefund/Cancellation Policy\n\n\n\nAny cancellations made prior to May 29\, 2022 will receive a full refund less a $35 processing fee.
