Especially when a child is in school and not yet verbal\, there can be a steady stream of questions asked to the child\, resulting in either no response or a nonverbal response (nodding\, pointing). Even when adults are asking the child well-formed questions or using effective prompts for speech\, the child may not yet be able to respond. At times\, having the ability to do a proper fade in to facilitate speech may not be possible for a variety of reasons. Thus educators\, school psychologists\, counselors\, speech/language pathologists and others may be perplexed in terms of how to engage the child in the most effective way. In this webinar\, Dr Busman will specifically talk about ways to increase nonverbal interaction without negatively reinforcing that the child is not yet talking. She will offer the attendee very specific strategies and tips that can increase the child’s participation. Dr Busman will also discuss how to use shaping strategies to promote child engagement.  \n\n\n\nAfter attending this session\, participant will be able to: \n\n\n\n\nDescribe two skills used to build a child’s comfort\n\n\n\nState how to prompt for a nonverbal response without reinforcing non speaking \n\n\n\nDescribe the process for shaping sounds to words \n\n\n\nExplain how to use SM assessment measures to monitor progress throughout treatment\n\n\n\n\nSpeaker: \n\n\n\nRachel Busman\, PsyD\, ABPP \n\n\n\nDr. Rachel Busman is a clinical psychologist specializing in the evaluation and treatment of anxiety and mood disorders in children and adolescents. She is the Senior Director of the Child & Adolescent Anxiety & Related Disorders Program at Cognitive Behavioral Consultants (CBC)\, where she runs Voices Rising\, an intensive group-based program for children with SM. Prior to joining CBC\, she ran Brave Buddies\, an internationally recognized SM program at the Child Mind Institute. She has extensive experience providing cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT) to children\, teenagers\, and young adults struggling with psychiatric disorders\, school difficulties\, and behavioral problems. Dr. Busman is certified in Parent Child Interaction Therapy for SM (PCIT-SM) and is an interagency trainer. This online approach allows us to continue to offer innovative\, meaningful content\, to share advances in the assessment and treatment of SM\, and to connect with a wider audience of participants from across the world. We are also pleased to announce that we are continuing our dedicated track of content intended for individuals with SM (ages 17 and up). It will be a wonderful time of gathering for the selective mutism community to learn the latest in evidence-based information\, support one another and connect our community! \n\n\n\nAll sessions will be recorded and available for later viewing (until December 31\, 2023) for those who register for the conference. Although we hope you can attend the conference live\, if you cannot do that\, you can watch all sessions later at your convenience. For professionals wishing to obtain continuing education credits\, please note that these credits can only be obtained if you attend live conference sessions–you can not watch recorded sessions and obtain continuing education credits. For those registrants who would like access to all talks\, including the professional\, caregiver-friendly\, and individual tracks\, you will need to register for the entire conference. \n\n\n\nKeynote Address\n\n\n\nSymptoms of Selective Mutism Beyond Silence: Current Findings and Their Relevance for diagnosis and treatment\, Prof. Dr. Christina Schwenck \n\n\n\nBiography \n\n\n\nProf. Dr. Christina Schwenck is a professor for Clinical Child and Adolescent Psychology at the University of Giessen\, Germany. Dr. Schwenck has studied psychology at the Universities of Würzburg and Madrid and completed her Ph.D. in Developmental Psychology at the University of Würzburg. She worked at the Departments of Child and Adolescent Psychiatry\, Psychosomatics and Psychotherapy of different University hospitals. She is a trained child and adolescent psychotherapist (specification behavior therapy)\, a trained supervisor\, and she has conducted her training in PCIT-SM with Dr. Steven Kurtz\, New York City. Her research interests comprise selective mutism\, conduct disorder\, and children of parents with mental illness. \n\n\n\nDate and Location\n\n\n\nThe online live virtual conference will begin on Friday\, October 6\, 2023  (early afternoon ET) and conclude on Saturday (early evening ET)\, October 7. October 6 will be a half-day. Start and end times will be confirmed in June 2023 after the agenda is set. All times will be in Eastern Time.  This conference will be conducted live (no prerecorded sessions); however\, talks will be recorded an available for later viewing for a limited amount of time. \n\n\n\nConference Offers Professional\, Caregiver\, Individuals with SM (Ages 17 and up) Track\n\n\n\nThe conference will offer presentations for professionals\, parents/family\, and individuals with SM\, but any person can attend any session that interests them. Supports available vary by school system and the needs of each individual child. Accommodation plans\, such as a 504 plan\, can provide important accommodations to increase their comfort in the school setting. However\, incorporating intervention steps\, beyond accommodation plans\, is important for increasing the amount of communication a child produces at school. Although some children with SM symptoms may require support through an Individualized Education Plan (IEP)\, other children with SM do not require this level of support. For school teams that utilize a Multi-Tiered System of Support (MTSS) or a Positive Behavior Intervention Support (PBIS) model\, consideration of team-based selection of evidence-based intervention options for the school\, appropriate modifications of current anxiety supports to directly target SM symptoms\, data-based decision-making approaches\, tools for tracking fidelity and impact\, and possible need for further coaching and training should be considered to ensure a school is quickly\, efficiently\, and comprehensively addressing the needs of children with SM in the school setting (Barrett et al.\, 2013). This webinar highlights practical recommendations and strategies when supporting a child with SM through an MTSS framework. This presentation will 1) discuss specific interventions and possible modifications to general anxiety interventions in order to support children with SM symptoms through Tier 2 or Tier 3 interventions\, 2) discuss various tools for monitoring progress\, and 3) highlight larger considerations for supporting children with SM within an MTSS framework. \n\n\n\nSpeakers: \n\n\n\nBrittany Bice-Urbach\, Ph.D. \n\n\n\nDr. Bice-Urbach is an Assistant Professor in the Department of Pediatrics at the Medical College of Wisconsin and a clinical psychologist at the Child Development Center\, at the Children’s Hospital of Wisconsin. She also has a clinical specialty in treating children and adolescents with anxiety disorders through cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT) with a primary focus on treating children with Selective Mutism. At the Child Development Center\, she has been offering assessment\, individual therapy\, and family/school consultation and training to support children with SM. She has participated in the Selective Mutism Training Institute and given several national presentations at the National Association for School Psychologists Annual Convention on the topic of addressing symptoms of SM in a school setting. She also has prioritized trainings for medical facilities and pediatricians on detecting symptoms of Selective Mutism and supporting children and families. \n\n\n\nTaylor Hicks-Hoste\, LP\, NCSP \n\n\n\nTaylor Hicks-Hoste is a licensed psychologist (LP) in the states of Michigan and California\, as well as a Nationally Certified School Psychologist (NCSP). She received her Ph.D. in school psychology from Michigan State University. Her professional experiences span across both school and clinic settings. As a school psychologist\, she has serviced students\, families and teachers\, grades preschool through twelfth grade. She has also worked as a countywide behavioral health consultant\, in which she has partnered with local districts in the promotion of mental health awareness and in the direct provision of school-based mental health supports to students. Taylor’s clinical work at Thriving Minds in Michigan includes the treatment of children\, teens\, and families with an emphasis on anxiety-based disorders such as selective mutism\, separation anxiety\, and school refusal.

Many kids successfully make gains to overcome the difficulty in speaking in certain settings.However\, there are many children and adolescents diagnosed with SM that have certain risk factors that could increase the need to add medication into their treatment plan.Due to misinformation and lack of understanding\, there is often a very negative connotation to using Psychiatric medications in children. Parents are very apprehensive to start medications out of fear of how these can affect their child.Through years of medical research and data collection\, we know how to safely and effectively use medication in children with SM that require it to successfully overcome their challenges. Even when using empirically supported interventions\, the effectiveness of a treatment plan for a particular individual may be limited by the nature and quality of the data used to develop it. While many assessment tools focused on youth anxiety broadly have been published and widely studied (Etkin\, Shimshoni\, Lebowitz\, and Silverman\, 2021; Etkin\, Lebowitz\, and Silverman\, 2021)\, there are far fewer measures specifically designed to evaluate symptoms of selective mutism. \n\n\n\nThis panel\, which will be geared towards treating professionals\, brings together four experts\, each of whom has developed a selective mutism-specific assessment tool. Dr. Lindsay Bergman will present on the Selective Mutism Questionnaire (Bergman\, Keller\, Piacentini\, and Bergman\, 2008)\, a parent-report measure which has widely been used in research and clinical settings. Dr. Angelika Gensthaler will present on the Frankfurt Scales of Selective Mutism (Gensthaler et al.\, 2020). The FSSM also is a parent-report questionnaire; it includes a diagnostic scale\, which can differentiate between selective mutism and social anxiety\, as well as a severity scale\, which reflects impairment caused by selective mutism symptoms. Dr. Elisa Shipon Blum will discuss the Social Anxiety Communication Inventory (SCAI) and Dr. Steven Kurtz will discuss the Selective Mutism Behavioral Observation Task (SM-BOT)\, a structured\, play-based assessment\, in which a child’s ease of speaking to a parent in a new setting\, to a parent in the presence of a stranger\, and directly to a stranger is evaluated. \n\n\n\nPanelists will provide an overview of each measure\, including the research base as relevant\, and discuss how treating professionals can incorporate these tools into their clinical practice.  \n\n\n\nLearning Objectives: \n\n\n\n\nAttendees will be able to describe how to use four different instruments in the assessment of selective mutism.\n\n\n\nAttendees will be able to determine which SM assessment tools are most appropriate to use in different clinical contexts.\n\n\n\nAttendees will be able to list three limitations of current methods for assessing selective mutism.\n\n\n\nAttendees will be able to explain how to use SM assessment measures to monitor progress throughout treatment.\n\n\n\n\nSpeakers: \n\n\n\nLindsey Bergman\, PhD \n\n\n\nLindsey Bergman is the Director of Intensive Outpatient Programming at Wavemind Clinic in Los Angeles\, CA and has been the recipient of federal grants for the study of selective mutism. She conducted the first randomized controlled study of behavioral treatment for SM and authored dozens of peer-reviewed research articles and chapters on selective mutism as well as pediatric anxiety and OCD. Dr. Bergman was on the faculty of the UCLA Psychiatry Department for over 20 years where she conducted clinical research and developed training curricula for psychiatry fellows and psychology interns. \n\n\n\nDr. Angelika Gensthaler \n\n\n\nAngelika Gensthaler is a Child and Adolescent Psychiatrist and researcher on Selective Mutism\, currently working as a lecturer\, supervisor and in the training of child and adolescent psychotherapists. \n\n\n\nSteven Kurtz\, PhD\, ABPP \n\n\n\nSteven Kurtz\, PhD\, ABPP specializes in assessing and treating child anxiety\, such as selective mutism and social phobia\, as well as externalizing behaviors\, such as ADHD and oppositionality. Dr. Kurtz is the original developer of Parent-Child Interaction Therapy Adapted for Selective Mutism (PCIT-SM)\, an empirically supported therapy for selective mutism now used worldwide and created the renowned Mighty Mouth Kids and Brave Buddies intensive SM treatment programs. He is a Global Trainer in Parent-Child Interaction Therapy (PCIT). As an expert commentator\, he has appeared on numerous programs addressing child mental health\, including NBC’s Today\, CBS’s The Early Show and PBS’s Keeping Kids Healthy and was featured in the Canadian Broadcasting Company’s ADD & Lovin’ It. He is a Board Certified Specialist in Behavioral and Cognitive Psychology from the American Board of Professional Psychology and volunteers time in the leadership of numerous organizations such as the Selective Mutism Association. \n\n\n\nElisa Shipon-Blum\, DO \n\n\n\nElisa Shipon-Blum DO\, is the President and Director of the Selective Mutism Anxiety and Related Disorders Treatment Center (SMart Center) located in Jenkintown\, Pennsylvania. She is the Founder and Director Emeritus of the Selective Mutism Association (SMA) and a Director of the Selective Mutism Research Institute (SMRI)\, a foundation established to study Dr. Shipon-Blum’s theories and treatment methodologies on Selective Mutism. In addition\, Dr Shipon-Blum is Clinical Assistant Professor of Psychology & Family Medicine at the Philadelphia College of Osteopathic Medicine. Registration coming soon. \n\n\n\nThe Selective Mutism Training Institute (SMTI) is an in-depth 2-day training course for professionals working with children diagnosed with selective mutism (SM). The workshop is intensive\, and skills-based with the goal of increasing competence in providing empirically-supported treatment of SM to professionals with beginner and intermediate exposure and skills in assessing and treating SM. We maintain a high instructor to participant ratio to ensure adequate time for modeling and video role-play of the skills. \n\n\n\nThis is a unique opportunity for mental health professionals\, speech-language professionals and graduate-level trainees to learn cutting-edge\, innovative techniques to effectively treat children with SM. Small group\, video consultation with the course instructors following the 2-day training is included in the cost\, allowing participants to further apply the skills in their own unique clinical settings. \n\n\n\nThe workshop starts with providing a framework for understanding the etiology of SM\, highlighting the role of nature\, nurture\, temperament\, and developmental differences in the onset and maintenance of SM\, social anxiety\, and other common comorbidities. Strategies for behavioral\, developmental\, and language assessment will be reviewed\, including how to conduct observations of children with SM. Evidence-based interventions will be covered in depth\, including behavioral strategies such as stimulus fading\, shaping\, positive reinforcement\, and parent education/coaching. State-of-the-science interventions\, such as intensive treatments\, group-based interventions\, and school consultation will also be taught. Speech and language conceptualization\, assessment\, and interventions will also be reviewed. \n\n\n\nPlease note: At this time\, this training is only offered in English. The workshop is intensive and skills-based with the goal of increasing caregiver competence in utilizing empirically-supported treatment strategies for SM. We maintain a low instructor-to-participant ratio to ensure adequate time for modeling and video role-play of the skills.  Registration will be capped at 30 participants. \n\n\n\nThis is a unique opportunity for caregivers of children with selective mutism to learn cutting-edge\, innovative techniques to effectively address SM. Small group\, video consultation with the course instructors following the 2-day training is included in the cost. This will allow participants to further apply the skills in their own unique way. Please note this consultation does not provide individualized treatment. \n\n\n\nCost: $250 per person\, $450 for couples \n\n\n\nThis course is taught by leading experts\, researchers\, and authors in the field of Selective Mutism:  \n\n\n\nEmilly Doll\, M.A.\, M.S.\, CCC-SLP \n\n\n\nEmily Doll is a licensed speech-language pathologist who currently works in an elementary school in Eastern PA. Her caseload includes students in grades K-5 with a variety of social\, emotional\, cognitive\, and academic needs\, including students with selective mutism. Emily also participates as a counselor at the Child Mind Institute’s Brave Buddies programs for children with selective mutism. Prior to working as a speech pathologist\, Emily taught preschool for 10 years and worked one-on-one with a student with selective mutism in this setting. Emily received her M.A. in Applied Developmental Psychology with a focus on Language Acquisition from George Mason University and her M.S. in Speech-Language Pathology from East Stroudsburg University. She continues to conduct and collaborate in research within the speech pathology field through East Stroudsburg University\, where she also serves as a guest lecturer for graduate and undergraduate classes. Her professional interests are in helping children with anxiety and communication needs find the tools to communicate effectively and efficiently with those around them. \n\n\n\nTaylor Hicks-Hosts\, LP\, NCSP \n\n\n\nTaylor Hicks-Hoste is a licensed psychologist (LP) in the states of California and Michigan. She is also a Nationally Certified School Psychologist (NCSP). She received her Ph.D. in school psychology from Michigan State University. Her professional experiences span across both school and clinic settings. As a school psychologist\, she has serviced students\, families and teachers\, grades preschool through twelfth grade. She has also worked as a countywide behavioral health consultant\, in which she has partnered with local districts in the promotion of mental health awareness and in the direct provision of school-based mental health supports to students. Her clinical work includes the treatment of children\, teens\, and families with an emphasis on anxiety-based disorders such as selective mutism\, separation anxiety\, and school refusal. She currently serves as a member of the Board of Directors for the Selective Mutism Association. \n\n\n\nKatelyn Reed\, M.S.\, LLP \n\n\n\nKatelyn is a Limited Licensed Psychologist who completed her Master’s degree in Clinical Behavioral Psychology at Eastern Michigan University. She utilizes a variety of evidence-based Behavioral and Cognitive-Behavioral Treatments for children\, adolescents\, and teens. Katelyn is particularly passionate about treating children and adolescents with anxiety disorders and regularly assists children and families dealing with depression concerns as well as disruptive behaviors. Katelyn emphasizes collaborative care and frequently works in partnership with parents and schools to best assist clients and to promote growth. She provides psychoeducational assessments to evaluate for concerns such as ADHD and learning disorders and functional behavioral assessments (FBAs) to determine what facilitates problematic behaviors so that interventions can be tailored to the child and his/her environment. Since joining Thriving Minds in 2013\, Katelyn has worked extensively with children with Selective Mutism and Social Anxiety. In addition to therapy and assessments\, Katelyn leads seminars for professionals and parents regarding Selective Mutism and other topics (e.g.\, effective use of time-out\, potty-training\, and challenging behaviors at bedtime) and she is the Assistant Director for Confident Kids Camp\, an intensive week-long treatment program for children with Selective Mutism. \n\n\n\n Program Objectives – Participants will be able to: \n\n\n\n\nDescribe ways in which SM develops and appropriate timing for medical consultation\n\n\n\nState empirically-supported behavioral and cognitive treatment strategies\, including PCIT-SM (Parent-Child Interaction Therapy for Selective Mutism) techniques for SM in school\, home\, and public (social) settings\n\n\n\nList 3 strategies to effectively engage school personnel and educational staff when implementing relevant treatment strategies specific to youth with SM\n\n\n\nList various forms of caregiver self-care when supporting children with SM\n\n\n\n\nParticipants who will benefit from this training include all caregivers of children with selective mutism. Other participants will be considered on a case-by-case basis and are encouraged to email info@selectivemutism.org with their particulars to discuss if this training is appropriate. \n\n\n\nPrior Experience: The SMTI course is primarily intended for those with beginner and intermediate knowledge of SM. \n\n\n\nCouple Information: For those interested in registering at the couple rate\, please consider the following information. The couple rate is designed for spouses/partners who are caregivers of a child with SM who live in the same houeshold. When registering as a couple\, each person must have access to a device and both people who are registered should be in separate rooms during the training to prevent feedback/technological interference. It is necessary to register both members of a couple to allow for appropriate ratios for practice. Only those with paid registrations will be able to participate in the practice sessions which are a significant portion of the training. If family members would like to listen in the background to the teaching part of the training and NOT participate in the practice sessions\, they do not need to register. Only one entrance into the training will be allowed per individual registered. Two entrances to the training will be allowed per couple registraiton. \n\n\n\n*Please note that this training is offered in English. For those registrants who would like access to all talks\, including the professional\, caregiver-friendly\, and individual tracks\, you will need to register for the entire conference. \n\n\n\nKeynote Address\n\n\n\nHelping Behaviorally Inhibited Young Children Come out of their Shells\, Andrea Chronis-Tuscano\, Ph.D. \n\n\n\nBiography\n\n\n\nDr. Chronis-Tuscano is a Professor of Psychology at the University of Maryland and Director of the Maryland ADHD Program and UMD SUCCEEDS College ADHD Clinic. Dr. Chronis-Tuscano’s research focuses broadly on understanding early predictors of developmental outcomes for children with Attention- Deficit/Hyperactivity Disorder (including depression and alcohol/substance use) and developing novel treatments which target these early risk and protective factors. Much of this research has addressed issues related to maternal parenting and psychopathology (namely\, maternal depression and ADHD). A secondary line of research aims to examine the trajectory of young children displaying early behavioral inhibition\, including the development of psychopathology\, and to intervene by targeting key moderators of outcome (e.g.\, parenting and social relationships). \n\n\n\nDr. Chronis-Tuscano is the Past-President of the International Society for Research in Child and Adolescent Psychopathology; Associate Editor of the Journal of Consulting & Clinical Psychology; Fellow of the Association for Psychological Science; Fellow of the Association for Behavioral & Cognitive Therapies (ABCT); Fellow of the Society for Clinical Child & Adolescent Psychology (SCCAP); former Associate Editor of the Journal of Clinical Child & Adolescent Psychology; and standing member of the NIMH Mental Health Services Research (SERV) review committee. She is the Senior Director of the Child & Adolescent Anxiety & Related Disorders Program at Cognitive Behavioral Consultants (CBC)\, where she runs Voices Rising\, an intensive group-based program for children with SM. Prior to joining CBC\, she ran Brave Buddies\, an internationally recognized SM program at the Child Mind Institute. She has extensive experience providing cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT) to children\, teenagers\, and young adults struggling with psychiatric disorders\, school difficulties\, and behavioral problems. Dr. Busman is certified in Parent Child Interaction Therapy for SM (PCIT-SM) and is an interagency trainer. She is the past president of the SMA and continues to actively serve on the board. \n\n\n\nSpeaker: Eleanor Ezell\, LCSW \n\n\n\nEleanor Ezell\, LCSW\, is a licensed therapist in Tennessee and is the Founder and Clinical Director at Child and Family Therapy Collective based in Nashville\, TN. She has extensive experience providing evidence-based therapy to children and young teens who struggle with selective mutism\, anxiety\, ADHD and disruptive behavior disorders\, and a wide range of developmental delays. \n\n\n\nShe attended New York University for graduate training where she trained with and worked very closely with Dr. Steven Kurtz over 5 years treating children with selective mutism and related disorders. She completed a two-year Developmental Behavioral Pediatrics Fellowship at The University of Mississippi Medical Center where she also was personally grand funded to bring PCIT-SM and the Brave Buddies/Mighty Mouth Kids Camp model to the state of Mississippi. In the last 10 years\, she has participated in\, or replicated\, intensive treatment in New York\, California\, Mississippi and soon will replicate in Tennessee. Eleanor currently runs the selective mutism program at her Child and Family Therapy Collective in Nashville\, TN where she offers weekly sessions\, individual intensives and intensive group model treatment. \n\n\n\nEleanor is certified in Parent Child Interaction Therapy for SM (PCIT-SM) and certified PCIT-SM trainer. She has been involved in SMTI with SMA and enjoys working with the community to continue dissemination efforts to increase access to care.
