The workshop is intensive\, and skills-based with the goal of increasing competence in providing empirically-supported treatment of SM to professionals with beginner and intermediate exposure and skills in assessing and treating SM. We maintain a high instructor to participant ratio to ensure adequate time for modeling and video role-play of the skills. \n\n\n\nThis is a unique opportunity for mental health professionals\, speech-language professionals and graduate-level trainees to learn cutting-edge\, innovative techniques to effectively treat children with SM. Small group\, video consultation with the course instructors following the 2-day training is included in the cost\, allowing participants to further apply the skills in their own unique clinical settings. \n\n\n\nThe workshop starts with providing a framework for understanding the etiology of SM\, highlighting the role of nature\, nurture\, temperament\, and developmental differences in the onset and maintenance of SM\, social anxiety\, and other common comorbidities. In this webinar\, Dr. Becca Laptook and Dr. Rachel Merson will share strategies for parents and caregivers for managing the highs and lows of the holidays and for simultaneously helping their children practice being brave while still enjoying the special moments of the season. She received her doctorate in clinical psychology from the State University of NY at Stony Brook and completed her clinical internship at NY Presbyterian-Columbia University Medical School and subsequent child postdoctoral fellowship at North Shore-Long Island Jewish Health System. Dr. Laptook is a Clinical Associate Professor in the Department of Psychiatry & Human Behavior as well as the Department of Pediatrics at the Warren Alpert Medical School of Brown University. She works at Rhode Island Hospital where she is a psychologist at the Hasbro Children’s Partial Hospital Program\, a day-treatment program for kids ages 6-18 coping with both psychiatric and medical illnesses. Dr. Laptook specializes in working with children and families and has a particular interest and expertise in early childhood\, childhood anxiety\, Selective Mutism\, child temperament\, parent-child interactions\, and Cognitive Behavioral Therapy. \n\n\n\nRachel Merson\, Psy.D. is the Clinical Director of the Child and Adolescent Fear and Anxiety Treatment Program at the Boston University Center for Anxiety and Related Disorders (Child CARD). Dr. Merson has extensive experience providing evidence-based treatment to children and adolescents with a range of anxiety disorders and co-occurring emotional and behavioral concerns. As Director of Child CARD’s Selective Mutism Program\, she oversees Brave Bunch\, Child CARD’s intensive group treatment program for young children with SM. In addition\, Dr. Merson is actively involved in providing supervision and training to Child CARD graduate students and trainees. Indeed\, reward systems are incorporated into SM treatment packages much more frequently than other common behavioral intervention strategies such as shaping\, hierarchical exposure\, and stimulus fading (incorporated in 90% 57%\, 48%\, and 43% of treatment studies on SM between 2005-2015 respectively; Zakszeski & DuPaul\, 2017). \n\n\n\nMany schools employ a Multi-tiered System of Support (MTSS) framework in order to effectively match a student’s level of need with an appropriate level\, and type\, of support. This often includes the use of reinforcers (e.g.\, tangible items\, special privileges\, tailored praise) to help reinforce a student’s use of a new skill and/or progress they make towards an individualized goal (Center on Positive Behavioral Intervention Supports\, 2021). While school staff may have familiarity with rewards-based systems\, they may have less experience in tailoring these approaches to best benefit students with selective mutism. Furthermore\, school staff may encounter barriers in the adoption and implementation of reward systems.This is evidenced by current research\, which suggests that most students with SM have received accommodations and/or intervention supports via an Individualized Education Plan (IEP)\, Section 504 Plan\, or an informal plan (Boneff-Peng\, et al\, 2013). However\, targeted behavioral reinforcement techniques\, such as reward systems\, are not reported to be frequently employed in school settings for students with SM (Boneff-Peng\, et al\, 2013).Katelyn Reed and Dr. Hicks-Hoste will offer rationale for the inclusion of a reward system in a robust intervention program for students with SM. They will discuss strategies to maximize effective adoption and implementation for school staff\, as well as provide examples of reward-based strategies at both the class and individual student level. Through an exposure therapy model\, children with Selective Mutism are encouraged to be brave in talking with new people and in new settings. Katelyn emphasizes collaborative care and frequently works in partnership with parents and schools to best assist clients and to promote growth through education on appropriate goals and interventions. Katelyn is also the Assistant Director for Confident Kids Camp\, an intensive week-long treatment program for children with Selective Mutism. She is the President of the Selective Mutism Association and has served on their Board of Directors for the last 3 years. She has expertise in cognitive behavioral treatments of childhood selective mutism and anxiety\, and preschool mental health\, and serves as a trainer and consultant on the largest PCORI-funded project on anxiety in youth. She fostered the first randomized controlled trial on an intensive group behavioral treatment for youth with selective mutism\, recently published in Journal of Consulting and Clinical Psychology. Her selective mutism program has been featured in the media\, including The New York Times. She was an inaugural Associate Editor for Evidence Based Practice in Child and Adolescent Mental Health for 3 years. Prior to joining FIU\, she served as Clinical Director of the Child Program at the Center for Anxiety and Related Disorders of Boston University\, where she began their Selective Mutism Program. Merson\, Psy.D. \n\n\n\nRachel Merson\, Psy.D. is the Clinical Director of the Child and Adolescent Fear and Anxiety Treatment Program at the Boston University Center for Anxiety and Related Disorders (Child CARD). Dr. Merson has extensive experience providing evidence-based treatment to children and adolescents with a range of anxiety disorders and co-occurring emotional and behavioral concerns. However\, in some cases\, the fade-in strategy alone isn’t enough\, or for a number of reasons\, may not be an option for clinicians to use in their setting. This webinar will review additional strategies that clinicians can use to help children establish speech in new situations and with new people\, along with applied examples of activities related to these techniques. Her caseload includes students in grades K-5 with a variety of social\, emotional\, cognitive\, and academic needs\, including students with selective mutism. Emily also participates as a counselor at the Child Mind Institute’s Brave Buddies programs for children with selective mutism. Prior to working as a speech pathologist\, Emily taught preschool for 10 years and worked one-on-one with a student with selective mutism in this setting. Emily received her M.A. in Applied Developmental Psychology with a focus on Language Acquisition from George Mason University and her M.S. in Speech-Language Pathology from East Stroudsburg University. She continues to conduct and collaborate in research within the speech pathology field through East Stroudsburg University\, where she also serves as a guest lecturer for graduate and undergraduate classes. At times\, having the ability to do a proper fade in to facilitate speech may not be possible for a variety of reasons. Supports available vary by school system and the needs of each individual child. Accommodation plans\, such as a 504 plan\, can provide important accommodations to increase their comfort in the school setting. However\, incorporating intervention steps\, beyond accommodation plans\, is important for increasing the amount of communication a child produces at school. Although some children with SM symptoms may require support through an Individualized Education Plan (IEP)\, other children with SM do not require this level of support. For school teams that utilize a Multi-Tiered System of Support (MTSS) or a Positive Behavior Intervention Support (PBIS) model\, consideration of team-based selection of evidence-based intervention options for the school\, appropriate modifications of current anxiety supports to directly target SM symptoms\, data-based decision-making approaches\, tools for tracking fidelity and impact\, and possible need for further coaching and training should be considered to ensure a school is quickly\, efficiently\, and comprehensively addressing the needs of children with SM in the school setting (Barrett et al.\, 2013). This webinar highlights practical recommendations and strategies when supporting a child with SM through an MTSS framework. This presentation will 1) discuss specific interventions and possible modifications to general anxiety interventions in order to support children with SM symptoms through Tier 2 or Tier 3 interventions\, 2) discuss various tools for monitoring progress\, and 3) highlight larger considerations for supporting children with SM within an MTSS framework. \n\n\n\nSpeakers: \n\n\n\nBrittany Bice-Urbach\, Ph.D. \n\n\n\nDr. Bice-Urbach is an Assistant Professor in the Department of Pediatrics at the Medical College of Wisconsin and a clinical psychologist at the Child Development Center\, at the Children’s Hospital of Wisconsin. She also has a clinical specialty in treating children and adolescents with anxiety disorders through cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT) with a primary focus on treating children with Selective Mutism. At the Child Development Center\, she has been offering assessment\, individual therapy\, and family/school consultation and training to support children with SM. She has participated in the Selective Mutism Training Institute and given several national presentations at the National Association for School Psychologists Annual Convention on the topic of addressing symptoms of SM in a school setting. She also has prioritized trainings for medical facilities and pediatricians on detecting symptoms of Selective Mutism and supporting children and families. \n\n\n\nTaylor Hicks-Hoste\, LP\, NCSP \n\n\n\nTaylor Hicks-Hoste is a licensed psychologist (LP) in the states of Michigan and California\, as well as a Nationally Certified School Psychologist (NCSP). She received her Ph.D. in school psychology from Michigan State University. Her professional experiences span across both school and clinic settings. As a school psychologist\, she has serviced students\, families and teachers\, grades preschool through twelfth grade. She has also worked as a countywide behavioral health consultant\, in which she has partnered with local districts in the promotion of mental health awareness and in the direct provision of school-based mental health supports to students.
