Dr. Furr obtained her doctorate in clinical psychology from Temple University\, and completed her clinical internship and postdoctoral fellowship at the NYU Child Study Center and Bellevue Hospital Program in New York. Dr. Furr currently serves as a Trainer for the Network for Expanding Child Wellness in Disaster-Affected Youth (or NEW DAY) – a SAMHSA-funded and National Child Traumatic Stress Network affiliated program providing largescale training and consultation in disaster mental health to youth-serving professionals in disaster-hit regions and disaster-prone regions across the United States. Dr. Furr has extensive clinical expertise and research interests in cognitive and behavioral treatments of childhood anxiety and disruptive behavior disorders\, with a particular focus on preschool mental health.  She has served as the Clinical Director of several federally funded randomized trials evaluating the acceptability and utility of telehealth strategies for expanding the scope and reach of mental health care; and currently provides training and supervision for clinical services for anxiety\, OCD\, and/or disruptive behavior problems for children and adolescents. Dr. Furr also has led the field of selective mutism in youth regarding clinical and research programs. She is the Past-President of the Selective Mutism Association and has continued to serve on their Board of Directors for the last 7 years. Dr. Furr is currently conducting one of the first long-term outcome studies on children with selective mutism. She has numerous publications and conducts trainings locally and nationally in the areas of trauma\, anxiety\, and selective mutism in youth. Small group\, video consultation with the course instructors following the 2-day training is included in the cost\, allowing participants to further apply the skills in their own unique clinical settings. \n\n\n\nThe workshop starts with providing a framework for understanding the etiology of SM\, highlighting the role of nature\, nurture\, temperament\, and developmental differences in the onset and maintenance of SM\, social anxiety\, and other common comorbidities. Indeed\, reward systems are incorporated into SM treatment packages much more frequently than other common behavioral intervention strategies such as shaping\, hierarchical exposure\, and stimulus fading (incorporated in 90% 57%\, 48%\, and 43% of treatment studies on SM between 2005-2015 respectively; Zakszeski & DuPaul\, 2017). \n\n\n\nMany schools employ a Multi-tiered System of Support (MTSS) framework in order to effectively match a student’s level of need with an appropriate level\, and type\, of support. This often includes the use of reinforcers (e.g.\, tangible items\, special privileges\, tailored praise) to help reinforce a student’s use of a new skill and/or progress they make towards an individualized goal (Center on Positive Behavioral Intervention Supports\, 2021). While school staff may have familiarity with rewards-based systems\, they may have less experience in tailoring these approaches to best benefit students with selective mutism. Furthermore\, school staff may encounter barriers in the adoption and implementation of reward systems.This is evidenced by current research\, which suggests that most students with SM have received accommodations and/or intervention supports via an Individualized Education Plan (IEP)\, Section 504 Plan\, or an informal plan (Boneff-Peng\, et al\, 2013). However\, targeted behavioral reinforcement techniques\, such as reward systems\, are not reported to be frequently employed in school settings for students with SM (Boneff-Peng\, et al\, 2013).Katelyn Reed and Dr. Hicks-Hoste will offer rationale for the inclusion of a reward system in a robust intervention program for students with SM. They will discuss strategies to maximize effective adoption and implementation for school staff\, as well as provide examples of reward-based strategies at both the class and individual student level. Finally\, they will address common barriers for its use (e.g.\, aligning stakeholders\, managing concerns about intrinsic and extrinsic motivation\, guarding against “bribery\,” etc.)  \n\n\n\nLearning Objectives \n\n\n\n\nIdentify specific measurable goals and possible reinforcement systems for students with SM in the school setting.\n\n\n\nDetermine appropriate means to implement and track progress over time when implementing a reward system in the school setting.\n\n\n\nIdentify means to gradually reduce the level of reinforcement support over time in reward systems.\n\n\n\n\nTaylor Hicks-Hoste\, LP\, NCSP \n\n\n\nTaylor Hicks-Hoste is a licensed psychologist (LP) in the states of Michigan and California\, as well as a Nationally Certified School Psychologist (NCSP). She received her Ph.D. in school psychology from Michigan State University. Her professional experiences span across both school and clinic settings. As a school psychologist\, she has serviced students\, families and teachers\, grades preschool through twelfth grade. She has also worked as a countywide behavioral health consultant\, in which she has partnered with local districts in the promotion of mental health awareness and in the direct provision of school-based mental health supports to students. Taylor’s clinical work at Thriving Minds in Michigan includes the treatment of children\, teens\, and families with an emphasis on anxiety-based disorders such as selective mutism\, separation anxiety\, and school refusal. \n\n\n\nSpeaker: Katelyn Reed\, MS\, LLP \n\n\n\nKatelyn Reed\, M.S. is a Limited Licensed Psychologist at Thriving Minds Family Services\, located in Chelsea\, MI. She completed her Master’s degree in Clinical Behavioral Psychology at Eastern Michigan University where she focused on evidence-based behavioral and cognitive behavioral interventions for children and adolescents. Through her work at Thriving Minds\, Katelyn specializes in treating children with Selective Mutism via traditional weekly therapy\, intensive therapy (i.e.\, 15-20 hours of treatment in one week)\, and group therapy models. Through an exposure therapy model\, children with Selective Mutism are encouraged to be brave in talking with new people and in new settings. Katelyn emphasizes collaborative care and frequently works in partnership with parents and schools to best assist clients and to promote growth through education on appropriate goals and interventions. Katelyn is also the Assistant Director for Confident Kids Camp\, an intensive week-long treatment program for children with Selective Mutism. In addition to her work with children with Selective Mutism\, Katelyn provides evidenced-based therapy for children with other anxiety disorders\, depressive disorders\, and disruptive behavior disorders. \n\n\n\nKatelyn has been a professional member of the Selective Mutism Association since 2013 and joined the Board of Directors in 2017. Dr. Busman is certified in Parent Child Interaction Therapy for SM (PCIT-SM) and is an interagency trainer. This workshop is skills-based with the goal of increasing caregiver competence in applying treatment strategies with their child who has SM. \n\n\n\nCost: $250.00 – $450.00 \n\n\n\nRegister \n\n\n\nThe Selective Mutism Training Institute for Caregivers (SMTI-Caregivers) is an in-depth 2-day training course for caregivers of children/youth (ages 3 – 17) diagnosed with selective mutism (SM). The workshop is intensive and skills-based with the goal of increasing caregiver competence in utilizing empirically-supported treatment strategies for SM. We maintain a low instructor-to-participant ratio to ensure adequate time for modeling and video role-play of the skills. Registration will be capped at 30 participants. \n\n\n\nThis is a unique opportunity for caregivers of children with selective mutism to learn cutting-edge\, innovative techniques to effectively address SM. Small group\, video consultation with the course instructors following the 2-day training is included in the cost. This will allow participants to further apply the skills in their own unique way. At the Child Development Center\, she has been offering assessment\, individual therapy\, and family/school consultation and training to support children with Selective Mutism. She has participated in the Selective Mutism Training Institute and given several national presentations at the National Association for School Psychologists Annual Convention on the topic of addressing symptoms of Selective Mutism in a school setting. She also has prioritized trainings for medical facilities and pediatricians on detecting symptoms of Selective Mutism and supporting children and their families through the journey in finding appropriate resources. Dr. Bice-Urbach is excited to be joining the board of SMA and collaborating to continue to increase awareness and access to evidence-based resources on SM for children\, families\, and treating professionals. \n\n\n\nJami Furr\, Ph.D. \n\n\n\nDr. Jami Furr is a Clinical Assistant Professor and Senior Psychologist in the Mental Health Interventions and Technology Program\, and Developer of the Selective Mutism Program at Florida International University Center for Children and Families. She is the President of the Selective Mutism Association and has served on their Board of Directors for the last 3 years. She has expertise in cognitive behavioral treatments of childhood selective mutism and anxiety\, and preschool mental health\, and serves as a trainer and consultant on the largest PCORI-funded project on anxiety in youth. She fostered the first randomized controlled trial on an intensive group behavioral treatment for youth with selective mutism\, recently published in Journal of Consulting and Clinical Psychology. Her selective mutism program has been featured in the media\, including The New York Times. She was an inaugural Associate Editor for Evidence Based Practice in Child and Adolescent Mental Health for 3 years. Prior to joining FIU\, she served as Clinical Director of the Child Program at the Center for Anxiety and Related Disorders of Boston University\, where she began their Selective Mutism Program. She received her Ph.D. in Clinical Psychology from Temple University\, completed her clinical internship in the Child Track at the NYU-Bellevue Clinical Psychology Internship Program and NYU Child Study Center\, and finished her training in a NIH-funded Postdoctoral Fellowship at the NYU Child Study Center. \n\n\n\nRachel A. Merson\, Psy.D. \n\n\n\nRachel Merson\, Psy.D. is the Clinical Director of the Child and Adolescent Fear and Anxiety Treatment Program at the Boston University Center for Anxiety and Related Disorders (Child CARD). Dr. Merson has extensive experience providing evidence-based treatment to children and adolescents with a range of anxiety disorders and co-occurring emotional and behavioral concerns. As Director of Child CARD’s Selective Mutism Program\, she oversees Brave Bunch\, Child CARD’s intensive group treatment program for young children with SM. In addition\, Dr. Merson is actively involved in providing supervision and training to Child CARD graduate students and trainees. She frequently conducts workshops with schools and community agencies on selective mutism and other topics related to child anxiety. Dr. Merson completed her undergraduate studies at the University of Virginia where she majored in Psychology and graduated with High Distinction. She went on to earn her Masters and Doctoral degrees in Clinical Psychology from the Graduate School of Applied and Professional Psychology (GSAPP) at Rutgers University. When registering as a couple\, each person must have access to a device and both people who are registered should be in separate rooms during the training to prevent feedback/technological interference.
