The Selective Mutism Group is proud to host the conference Treatment Methods that Help Rid the Silence, taking place on Friday, May 9, 2008 at the SERESC Conference Center in Bedford, New Hampshire.



Joleen Fernald, PhC CCC-SLP is a NH licensed, ASHA and Hanen certified speech-language pathologist. She working toward her PhD in Infant Mental Health and Developmental Disabilities. She is the NH SM Connections Coordinator and was elected to SMG's Board of Directors in 2007. Joleen's private speech and language practice focuses on working with children and their families. Joleen lives in Dover, NH with her husband and two daughters, the oldest of whom has selective mutism.

Dawn Huebner, PhD is a clinical psychologist in private practice in Exeter, NH, and the author of the best-selling series, the “What to Do Guides for Kids.” Dr. Huebner received her degree in clinical psychology from the University of Michigan. Dr. Huebner works exclusively with children and their parents, using evidence-based strategies to treat a host of problems including anxiety, mood, and behavioral disorders. Dr. Huebner is a member of the New Hampshire Psychological Association, the American Psychological Association, the Anxiety Disorders Association of America, and the Obsessive-Compulsive Foundation.

Dawn Huebner's presentation on the Banishing Worries One Step at a Time: A CBT Toolbox for Kids will be held from 9:00 to 10:30.


Joshua Gear, MD is Board Certified in Child and Adolescent, Adult, and Addiction Psychiatry. He received his Medical Degree from the University of Illinois at Chicago where he also completed a Residency in General Psychiatry. He completed a Fellowship in Child and Adolescent Psychiatry at the Yale Child Study Center.. Dr. Gear has been a Clinical Instructor in Psychiatry at both Yale and Harvard Medical Schools. He has been in private practice in Portsmouth for several years.

Joshua Gear will talk about the Role of Medication in Treating Anxiety and SM from 10:45 to 12:00.


Shelly Stratton, LICSW is a Child and Family therapist with a practice in Durham, NH. Shelly also provides play therapy at Easter Seals in Dover, NH. She has a broad range of experience with children and families experiencing difficulties in childcare programs, a school for homeless children, community mental health clinics, and intensive family intervention programs. As a play and sandplay therapist Shelly uses modalities that draw on a child’s interests in play and self expression.

Brianne Philipps, OTR/L< is a pediatric occupational therapist who works for Easter Seals New Hampshire in both their Dover and Raymond, NH clinics. She graduated from the University of New Hampshire and has worked in a variety of pediatric settings. Bri uses a holistic approach drawing from different theories of practice while working with the children she treats. Brianne is certified in the Therapeutic Listening Program and is also a Certified ChildLight Pediatric Yoga Instructor. Bri lives in Dover with her husband and 2 year old black lab mix.

Brianne Philipps will be presenting the topic Sensory Integration and Therapeutic Listening with Sue Ford from 2:00 to 2:45.


Sue Ford, MS OTR/L is a pediatric occupational therapist working for Easter Seals New Hampshire in their Dover clinic. She completed her Master’s Degree at Colorado State University. Sue has worked in a variety of pediatric settings, which has served as a foundation for working with children with a variety of special needs. Sue is certified in the Therapeutic Listening Program as well as trained in the use of the ADOS (Autism Diagnostic Observation Schedule) clinical applications. Sue currently lives in Kittery, Maine with her husband and their four year old black lab.

Sue Ford will be presenting the topic Sensory Integration and Therapeutic Listening with Brianne Philipps from 2:00 to 2:45.


Jeanne Kincaid, JD is a nationally known disability lawyer and consultant, representing public schools, colleges and universities nationwide on a host of disability and special education issues, including the physical accessibility requirements imposed by the Americans with Disabilities Act and the Rehabilitation Act. She has held staff attorney positions with the U.S. Department of Education's Office for Civil Rights, the Oregon Department of Education, and served as a hearing officer for the Oregon Bureau of Labor and the New Hampshire Department of Education. She is a contributing author to "Section 504, the ADA and the Schools" and "Disability Compliance for Higher Education."
