Shelley Avny, PhD, is a clinical psychologist specializing in the evaluation and treatment of anxiety and mood disorders in children and adolescents. She has experience in treating the full range of anxiety disorders including social phobia, generalized anxiety disorder, specific phobias, panic disorder, and separation anxiety disorder. Dr. Avny has particular interest and training in providing cognitive-behavioral therapy (CBT) to youth with selective mutism, obsessive-compulsive disorder, and post-traumatic stress disorder.
Dr. Avny received her doctorate in clinical psychology from Virginia Commonwealth University. She completed her pre-doctoral internship in child and pediatric psychology at the University of Florida Health Science Center, where she specialized in assessment, treatment, and consultation for a broad range of difficulties including anxiety, mood, and disruptive behavior disorders; sleep problems; obesity; and adjustment issues related to acute and chronic illness. Dr. Avny has received extensive training at the Children’s Hospital of Philadelphia, the University of Pennsylvania (Child & Adolescent OCD, Tic, Trich & Anxiety Group; Center for the Treatment and Study of Anxiety), and the NYU Child Study Center. She earned her bachelor’s degree in psychology at the University of Maryland.
Dr. Avny’s research interests include optimizing treatment outcomes for children and adolescents with anxiety disorders. Specifically, she is interested in examining parental involvement in treatment and identifying effective strategies for parents to become the child’s “coach” between therapy sessions. She is also interested in preventing the onset of substance and alcohol abuse in adolescents who have experienced a trauma. Dr. Avny has co-authored book chapters (Handbook of Child and Adolescent Anxiety Disorders; Encyclopedia of Adolescence) and scholarly articles, and served as an ad hoc reviewer for several journals. She is a member of the Association for Behavioral and Cognitive Therapies, Selective Mutism Association, and Trichotillomania Learning Center.
Dr. Avny is invested in helping children and families learn to effectively manage their challenges. She is committed to using evidence-based treatments to guide her work, while using a flexible and individualized approach to meet each patient’s needs.
