Katelyn Reed is a limited license behavioral psychotherapist at Thriving Minds Behavioral Health in Brighton, Michigan. Katelyn completed her M.S. degree in Clinical Behavioral Psychology at Eastern Michigan University, where she focused on behavioral and cognitive-behavioral interventions for children and adolescents. She is particularly passionate about treating children with anxiety concerns, including Obsessive Compulsive Disorder, Generalized Anxiety Disorder, and Selective Mutism (SM).
Katelyn began treating SM after she joined Thriving Minds Behavioral Health and received extensive didactic and in vivo training in the expert assessment and treatment of SM. In practice, Katelyn implements evidence-based cognitive-behavioral therapy to address SM. That is, she frequently utilizes exposure tasks, where children are gently and systematically guided through the confrontation of anxiety-eliciting speaking situations; stimulus fading procedures, wherein speech is transferred from comfortable situations to novel situations; and relaxation training, where children are taught to alter their physiological anxiety response through deep breathing and muscle relaxation. Furthermore, Katelyn works with children and families to address other concerns arising from SM including social skill deficits and paruresis.
