Vera Joffe, Ph.D., PA

Dr. Joffe has been treating Selective Mutism for many years. She has experienced the need to help parents learn about S.M., and also for them to have a tool to help their children’s teachers as well as other family members to read about and to understand that S.M. is a social-anxiety communication disorder. Dr. Joffe wrote a book for parents and for teachers from the point of view of a child with S.M.: Sophie’s Story: A Guide to Selective Mutism. Dr. Joffe provides treatment for children with neurodevelopmental disorders, including ADHD, Tourette's Syndrome anxiety, mood disorders, Asperger's Syndrome, and other anxiety disorders such as Selective Mutism, Obsessive Compulsive Disorder, and Social Anxiety Dr. Joffe has written three books, which are about Asperger's Syndrome, Selective Mutism, and a book on Adult ADHD. She works with children and families, consults with schools, hospitals, and is a professional board member of CHADD. Dr. Joffe has also been part of the National Board of Directors of the Selective Mutism Group for the last year.

She uses cognitive behavior therapy for SM. However, the approach is more complex with interviews of parents, visits to the school (to observe the child), consults with the school, and interventions at school, with the family, and at the office.
