Dr. Salgado uses directive and nondirective play therapy and family therapy to treat Selective Mutism. In addition, she is going to resume using Eye Movement Desensitization Reprocessing (EMDR). She uses EMDR for other anxieties with children and adults and would like to use EMDR as the first therapeutic approach to address the anxiety related to SM.
Dr. Salgado has been a Mental Health Consultant with Head Start in New York City since 2002. At Head Start, she provides education and strategies to parents and teachers of preschoolers who appear to have SM. Prior to her experience with Head Start, she worked ten years in outpatient Child Psychiatry Clinics and where encountered and treated her first case of SM.
