Our clinic uses a cognitive behavioral treatment that involves working with the parents, school system (or preschool), and social network to help the child increase social interactions, decrease avoidance behaviors and participate more fully in their daily activities with which SM interferes. We use graduated exposure practice, psycho-education, development of an appropriate Individualized Education Plan (IEP), when needed, and parent skills training to help the child normalize social interactions and communication. Referrals for medication evaluation and ancillary service (OT, ST, etc.) are available.
