Selective Mutism has been defined as a social communication anxiety disorder of childhood. With the prevalence rising to an estimated 1 in 143, it is a disorder that merits significant attention and focus.

This one day conference will enable participants to:

  • Describe the differences between shyness and Selective Mutism
  • Identify assessments that may be used to assess children with SM
  • Describe which is more appropriate, a Section 504 Plan or an IEP
  • Identify the four stages of Selective Mutism
  • Understand treatment strategies and options for children with SM

Presenters

Joleen Fernald, MS CCC-SLP—Joleen is a speech / language pathologist and a PHD student studying infant mental health and developmental disabilities. She is the NH Selective Mutism Connections Coordinator and was elected to SMG’s Board of Directors in 2007. Joleen has been instrumental in supporting the development of the Easter Seals multi-disciplinary assessment and treatment clinic specifically for Selective Mutism.

Stephen Quinlan, MS LICSW— Stephen is a licensed clinical social worker who has worked in several mental health settings. He has considerable expertise in play therapy, sand tray therapy, animal assisted therapy and psycho-education in his work with children and families. Stephen has over ten years of experience as a psychotherapist and is one of the behavioral health specialists on the Selective Mutism team.
