When children enter school, they need a strong support network to thrive academically and socially. Children with selective mutism (SM) need additional support, but advocating for them can be enormously challenging-and parents can become lost in the school system. Susan J. Schwartz, a national expert in child development, discusses the steps parents can take to get the services their children need and deserve. She explains the various ways parents and concerned teachers can approach their school systems, and by the end of this workshop, you'll have a deeper understanding of the special education services and individualized education plan (IEP) options for children with SM. She also will discuss how testing can and should be modified to properly assess your children-or students-and to best tap into what they really know and really can do.
The Child Mind Institute is streaming these workshops live to www.ustream.tv/channel/child-mind-institute so that interested families can watch and participate live, in real-time, from anywhere in the world!
