Expert: Dawn Huebner, PhD
The days are hard enough, but scores of SM kids also have problems with sleep. Fears, restlessness, and brains that won’t shut off make it virtually impossible for many anxious children to simply close their eyes and go to sleep, resulting in over-dependence on parents and a weary game of musical beds. Tough nights lead to worse-than-usual mornings, with heightened sensitivity and a host of physical ills causing meltdowns around dressing, eating, and leaving for school. Inadequate sleep is linked to increased tearfulness, irritability, anxiety, and trouble concentrating – not to mention the problems it causes kids!
Join psychologist and author Dawn Huebner, PhD, as she answers questions regarding helping children fall asleep and stay asleep alone. Dr. Huebner maintains a private practice in Exeter, NH, treating children ages 12 and under, and their parents. She is also the author of the award-winning What-to-Do Guides for Kids, a self-help series published by the American Psychological Association. Dr. Huebner’s newest book, What to Do When You Dread Your Bed: A Kid’s Guide to Overcoming Problems With Sleep,, teaches children the cognitive-behavioral skills they need for more restful nights and happier mornings.
