This presentation covers a general overview of selective mutism and related childhood anxiety disorders including causes and risk factors, co-existing conditions, behavioral characteristics of kids, treatment interventions, school interventions, medication and more. It contains evidence-based information and references. In addition, "the silent period" in children speaking a primary language other than English will be discussed.

Julie Nicodemus uses conceptual family therapy to treat selective mutism and related anxiety disorders across the generations. She has a master's degree in Marriage and Family Therapy from the University of Houston-Clear Lake and a bachelor's degree from the University of Houston in Adult Training and Development. She has served as the Texas State Coordinator for the Selective Mutism Group since 2003. Julie works in private practice at Moments of Clarity Therapy (www.houstontherapy.net) and for Deer Oaks Behavioral Health in medical family therapy.
